Hematites Cruise to 47-24 Victory Over Modeltowners

Ishpeming, MIFebruary 7th, 2022 – The Ishpeming Hematites girls basketball team looked to continue their winning ways this evening when they hosted the Gwinn Modeltowners. The Hematites defeated the Modeltowners 55-21 in their last meeting, which took place
just five days ago. The game was broadcasted on 98.3 WRUP.

1Q: The Modeltowners won the tip to begin the ball game, but quickly turned the ball over to the Hematites. Jenna Maki had an opportunity for the Hematites in their first offensive possession, but her shot came up short. The Modeltowners turned the ball over a few more times that eventually set up the first score of the game, as Ishpeming’s Hannah Deloughary got the Hematites on the board. The Hematites were able to get back on the board a few minutes later as Lilly Swanson buried a triple to take a 7-0 lead. The Modeltowners offensive play was littered with turnovers as Ishpeming was very successful on the press. Addie Morton connected on a three pointer as Jenna Maki got a steal and score for the Hematites, with just under 2:00 remaining in the opening quarter, Ishpeming led 14-0. The Modeltowners were able to get on the board in the final seconds of the quarter, as the Hematites led 14-2 heading into the second quarter.

2Q: A free throw from Jenna Maki and two more from the Modeltowners changed the scoreboard to 15-4 right out of the gates. Similar to the first quarter, both teams seemed to struggle offensively in the middle of the quarter. Ishpeming was able to get their first field goal of the quarter with just 1:30 remaining in the second. Gwinn never made a field goal in the second quarter as they only connected on four free throws. The Hematites held onto a 22-6 lead at the half.

3Q: The Hematites began the quarter with the basketball, as they couldn’t connect on their first offensive possession. The Modeltowners were also scoreless on their offensive possession, but they began to score a few minutes later. Gwinn scored five points in a 60 second span as they only scored six in the entire first half alone. The Hematites were able to get on the board thanks to Lilly Swanson and her free throws. With around 4:15 remaining in the quarter, the Hematites led 29-12. The Hematites connected on a few triples to end the third quarter, thanks to Morton and Deloughary. After three quarters of play, Ishpeming was controlling a 39-14 lead.

4Q: The Modeltowners were given the first offensive possession of the quarter, as it was successful, cutting the deficit to twenty five. The Hematites stalled a bit on their offensive possessions as they were able to with their big lead. A simple play style would eliminate any possibility of injury for the Hematites. With 3:20 remaining in the ball game, Ishpeming led 41-20. The Hematites would quickly sub in the alternates after a three pointer from Swanson, as Ishpeming would cruise to their third straight victory in a six day stretch.

The Hematites will quickly return to action tomorrow, when they host the Gladstone Braves. The ball will tip at 8 pm as you can hear the broadcast on 98.3 WRUP.
