Gwinn, MI – January 29th, 2022 – The Ishpeming Hematites boys basketball team continued their season this afternoon, when they traveled to Gwinn to take on the Modeltowners. The game was broadcasted on 98.3 WRUP.
1Q: A great start for the Hematites on Saturday afternoon, as they connected on an old fashion three point play to start the ball game. Ishpeming continued to gain an offensive advantage due to their physical play midway through the quarter, as the lead was out to 5 at one point in the ball game. Gwinn did a great job sticking around as their defensive play started to pick up a bit. The key play of the opening quarter was a block from AJ Prosser that led to a Parker Gauthier bucket. After one quarter of play, the Hematites led 11-9.
2Q: There were no scores for the first 1:30 of the second quarter, but it was Gwinn tying the ball game thanks to a bucket from Keegan Woods. Both teams were able to score some more buckets in the next few minutes as Ishpeming led 15-13 with just under six minutes to play in the half. AJ Prosser continued to make big plays as he capitalized with an old fashion three point play to jump out to a five point lead. A lead that would soon dwindle down, thanks to an aggressive Gwinn attack late in the quarter. Momentum would soon reverse again, as Preston Gauthier successfully completed a three point play to take a seven point lead for the Hematites. The momentum would carry into the locker room as Ishpeming led 24-16 at the half.
3Q: Both teams came out hot to start the second half as the Ishpeming lead extended to nine after a 29-20 start to the quarter. A fast start resulted in a slow next few minutes as there were no scores for over three minutes. A bucket from Gwinn would follow a three pointer from AJ Prosser, giving the Hematites a 32-22 lead. Gwinn would go on a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to three, but Keegan Woods would beat the buzzer on a three point shot to head into the 4th quarter leading 35-29.
4Q: The Modeltowners opened the quarter with an opportunity at an old fashion three point play, but the free throw was missed. Ishpeming began to gain momentum in the early
parts of the quarter as free throws were beginning to fall, with around six minutes to play, Ishpeming led 41-31. Both teams began to struggle in the next few minutes, until
Ishpeming took control with just under four minutes to play in the game, after getting some defensive stops and capitalizing on offense, the Hematites led by fourteen, but the
Modeltowners once again, went on a run. After forcing passes and missing several free throws, Gwinn managed to cut the deficit to six points with 2:45 remaining. Both teams were in the bonus as Gwinn had chances to capitalize from the line, but could not get the job done. Ishpeming however made a pair to take the eight point lead with just 1:30 remaining in the ball game. The Modeltowners never gave up in the contest, but Ishpeming was able to close out the game in the final minute.
