Iron Mountain, Michigan – February 1st, 2016 – Mike Plourde and Bob Nadeau were in West Ishpeming, MI for the Ishpeming Hematites game against the Westwood Patriots on 98.3 WRUP and WRUP.com. The Hematites looked to keep their season going strong, and Mike and Bob brought you their stats and predictions during the Honor Credit Union pregame show!
Iron Mountain was able to take the opening tip off, and they were the first to put points on the scoreboard on a quick break layup. However, the Ishpeming Hematites‘ full-court press forced a turnover on their next possession which allowed the Hematites to score their first points. Despite some tough play from Ishpeming, the Mountaineers were able to go on a six-point scoring run which only ended after a free throw was made. Iron Mountain continued to pull away from the Hematites, and at the end of the first quarter, the score was Ishpeming nine and Iron Mountain 18.
The Ishpeming Hematites did their best to stay close to the Iron Mountain Mountaineers as the second quarter began, but, despite some amazing defense, the Mountaineers extended their lead even further. Khora Swanson had multiple great plays, and she helped Ishpeming move closer when she absolutely nailed a long three-pointer halfway through the quarter. It continued to be a tough game for Ishpeming as the second quarter drew to a close, and Iron Mountain had a lead of fourteen points at the end of the first half.

At the start of the third quarter, the Ishpeming Hematites trailed the Iron Mountain Mountaineers. The Hematites made up a lot of ground in the first minutes of the third quarter, but halfway through the quarter, Iron Mountain had their largest lead of the game. Khora Swanson brought the Mountaineers’ lead down to twelve points when she swooshed another long three points shot with three minutes left in the third. Only a couple of possessions later, Khora again nailed a three-pointer, bringing Iron Mountain’s lead down to eight points. Ishpeming went on a 10-point scoring run in the latter half of the third quarter, and that brought them to within striking distance of the Mountaineers. At the end of the third, the score was 32-44, in favor of Iron Mountain.
Mariah Austin of the Ishpeming Hematites also had some great plays throughout the game, and she was integral to the Hematites’ defense. She had a great take-away from the Mountaineers early in the fourth, and that allowed Ishpeming to stay close to Iron Mountain. The action in the gym went back and forth, but Iron Mountain was able to maintain their lead for much of the fourth quarter. Before the end of the game, the Hematites had worked their way to within eight points, but they were unable to overtake the Mountaineers for the win.
