Ishpeming, Michigan – January 25th, 2016 – Mike Plourde and Bob Nadeau were in Ishpeming, MI for the Ishpeming Hematites game against the Negaunee Miners on 98.3 WRUP and WRUP.com. The Hematites looked to keep their season going strong, and Mike and Bob brought you their stats and predictions during the Honor Credit Union pregame show!
The Ishpeming Hematites started their game against the Negaunee Miners without one of their main starters. Marissa Minot had sprained her ankle in the Hematites’ last game against the Manistique Emeralds, and she wouldn’t be back for several games. Despite being on their back foot at the start of the game, Ishpeming was able to keep the game very close. Halfway through the first quarter, the score was Ishpeming six and Negaunee seven, and the Hematites kept the game close thanks to some impressive defense. Madigan Johns had six points with three minutes left in the quarter, and she looked to keep on tallying points as the quarter wound down. With under a minute left in the first quarter, Ishpeming trailed the Miners, but only by one point. The first quarter ended with a tied score of 12-12 on 98.3 WRUP and WRUP.com!
The second quarter started off with the Ishpeming Hematites bringing the ball into play against the Negaunee Miners. It continued to be a very close game, and the Hematites were able to stay within one point of the Miners throughout much of the second quarter. The lead was traded back and forth, but neither team managed to gain a significant lead. With just seconds left in the first half, Chloe Sjholm nailed a short jump shot for two points to take the lead over Negaunee.

The Ishpeming Hematites took the second half tip-off, and they quickly added two points to their score. It continued to be a great game, and the Negaunee Miners played some great offense. As both teams sensed the end of the game approaching, they each started to strategically use their fouls. The game was all tied up at 35-35 with two minutes remaining in the third quarter. Madigan Johns kept up her excellent play and put the Hematites in front on a medium-length jump shot between two defenders. However, the Negaunee Miners retook the lead just before the end of the quarter 40-39 on 98.3 WRUP!
The final quarter dawned with the Ishpeming Hematites trailing the Negaunee Miners by a single point, but Ishpeming retook the lead on a fast-break jump shot after the in-bounds pass. Negaunee and Ishpeming traded the lead back and forth multiple times as the intensity in the gym increased. With just over three minutes left in the game, Negaunee managed to take the lead. The Miners held a three point lead with just under 20 seconds left in the game, and the Hematites did everything in their power to tie the game. With just seconds left in the game, Ishpeming wasn’t able to take advantage of the Miners’ fouls and took a tough loss to a great team.
