It was sure to be an action-packed game as the Ishpeming Hematite girls won the opening toss against the Manistique Emeralds. It became obvious quickly that the game would be a highly defensive battle, but the Hematites fought through Manistique’s defense and scored the first points of the game. Mariah Austin had some great defensive plays of her own, and she also put some points up on the board to help Ishpeming gain a small lead. The Emeralds win/loss record didn’t reflect their ability, as the Hematites consistently had trouble dealing with their defense. At the end of the first quarter, Ishpeming was able to gain a small lead over Manistique 9-6.
Manistique brought the ball into play to start the second quarter, but the time between quarters seemed to give the Ishpeming Hematites‘ coach just enough time to spark some life into his players. Ishpeming looked like a different team in the second, and they were able to go on a twelve-point scoring run midway through the quarter. Manistique was finally able to end the scoring streak with just under two minutes left in the half, but Ishpeming answered immediately. Marissa Minot had a great game for the Hematites considering she had a broken finger, and she helped increase Ishpeming’s lead with a long jump shot thirty seconds before the half.
