Ishpeming, MI – February 27th, 2020 – The Ishpeming Hematites girls basketball team hosted the Kingsford Flivvers Thursday night, this would be the Hematites last regular season game of the year. Ishpeming would end up losing this one, 47-39.
It would be a slow start to the contest as Kingsford made a shot early on, but that would be the only made shot in the first two minutes.
The Flivvers would find a stretch of offense as they would make another short two, followed by a deep three-pointer to take the 7-0 advantage in the first half of the first quarter.
Ishpeming couldn’t get a shot to fall in the first unfortunately, Kingsford would make two more shots and trail 11-0 at the end of the first.
The eight minute scoring drought ended in the first minute of the second quarter, Madisyn Mead would follow up the first basket with a deep three, it would be a seven point Kingsford lead in the first two minutes of the second, 12-5. Emma Poirier would nail a three-pointer and the Hematites would get another shot to fall, it would be 17-10 with three minutes to play.
Both sides would battle back-and-fourth down the stretch of the first half, the score at halftime would be; Kingsford 24, Ishpeming 15.
In the third, it was another slow starting quarter for both teams, but Kingsford was just a tad bit faster. With four minutes to go in the quarter, it was Kingsford leading 30-15. Kayla Koski would get the first bucket of the quarter for the Hematites with 3:30 to go in the quarter. The Hematites would make two more shot in the quarter, but they would still trail, 34-22, heading into the fourth.
Kingsford would start the quarter with a deep three-pointer, but Ishpeming would score the next seven, it would be 37-29 with six minutes to play. A three-pointer by Kingsford would be the response of choice, 40-29. After some fast paced action, with four minutes to go in the fourth, it seemed like a comeback would be unlikely, 44-31.
The Hematites wouldn’t give in however, they would go on a 6-0 run in the next three minutes to cut the lead down to six with 40 seconds to play. It would be 45-39 with 13 seconds left and the Hematites would run out of time in this one.
