The Ishpeming Hematites boys basketball team prepares to face the Kingsford Flivers on 98.3 WRUP

Kingsford, MITuesday, December 18th, 2018 – After three really tough losses, the Ishpeming Hematite boys basketball team was on the hardwood to face the Kingsford Flivers in hopes of their first win. As always, Tyler Young and Bob Nadeau were courtside to bring all the action to you live on 98.3 WRUP!

The Ishpeming Hematites were ready to take the win home from this game as they scored six points in under two minutes of play to take a 6-2 lead over Kingsford. The action flowed back and forth down the court, but the Hematites maintained their lead after the score clock moved under four minutes left in the first. The Flivers battled back somewhat as the first quarter wound down, but Ishpeming was able to maintain the lead.

It was the Kingsford Flivers who scored first in the second quarter, but they still trailed the Ishpeming Hematites. Thanks to some great defense plays by Gavin Sundberg, the Hematites were again able to stay on top of the score as the second neared the halfway mark with a score of 20-16. With just under four minutes left in the half, Ishpeming led by seven points, and they looked to keep the ball rolling and increase their lead before going into the locker rooms for halftime. Despite doing well for most of the first two quarters, Kingsford slowly but surely again fought back to tie the score at 29-29 with about thirty seconds left in the half.

After a tough locker room meeting, the Ishpeming Hematites were ready to battle back and take home a well deserved win over the Kingsford Flivers. As they had done in the two previous quarters, Ishpeming jumped out to a decent early lead, but this time, they were able to maintain a score of 40-35 with a couple of minutes left to play in the third quarter. Just before the buzzer sounded at the end of the third, Ishpeming was able to extend their lead to six points, but the Flivers had one more chance to score before the quarter ended.

Finally holding a decent lead, the Ishpeming Hematites simply had to stay strong on defense for one more quarter. Kingsford scrambled to respond as Ishpeming extended their lead to 50-41 in the first minutes of the fourth, giving them a little breathing room. As the fourth quarter passed the four minute mark, the Hematites maintained their lead as their excitement grew. The Flivers started burning fouls and timeouts, trying anything they could muster to stop the Hematites’ roll.  As the score-clock moved under 90 seconds to play, Ishpeming drained another jump shot to make the score 61-38. Although the Flivers once again battled back late in the quarter, Ishpeming was able to secure their victory!
