Ishpeming, MI – August 31, 2018 -The Ishpeming Hematites won their second game of the 2018 season on Friday night, defeating the Lake Linden – Hubbell Lakes by a score of 38-12. The Hematites, who beat the Manistique Emeralds 52-0 the week prior, improved to 2-0 on the year with their second dominant performance in a row.
The Lakes wasted no time after receiving the opening kickoff, scoring just 52 seconds into the game and taking an early 6-0 lead after missing the extra point. Ishpeming responded in kind, putting together an 11-play, 65-yard drive, which was capped off by a 5 yard rushing touchdown by Hunter Smith. Gavin Sundberg converted the two-point attempt, and Ishpeming took the lead 8-6. It didn’t take long for the Hematites to double their lead, this time with Sundberg running 28 yards for the touchdown and Smith recording the two-point conversion to make the score 16-6, which is where the teams stood at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Ishpeming stretched their lead to 24-6 on a 43 yard run by Matthew Trawick. The Lakes very nearly cut the deficit by a score, making their way down to the Ishpeming 1-yard-line, but the Hematites defense stood as strong as their name would imply, stuffing Lake Linden and forcing a turnover on downs. Both teams had possessions after this, but neither was able to score before halftime, and the score was 24-6 Ishpeming going into the interval.
Near the end of the third quarter, the Ishpeming Hematites added another touchdown when Hunter Smith, again ran the ball into the end zone making the score 32 – 6 where it stood at the end. Early in the fourth quarter, Ishpeming scored again and increased their lead to 38 – 6. Lake Linden answered quickly with a touchdown of their own cutting into their deficit, resulting in a score of 38 – 12, but it wasn’t enough and Ishpeming Hematites came away with the victory.
The Hematites will be in action again on September 7th when they host the Norway Knights. Listen to all the action 98.3 WRUP and online at wrup.com.
