Ishpeming, Mi – January 27th, 2023 – The Ishpeming Hematite Girls take on the Westwood Patriots Friday night. Bob Nedeau and Tyler Young were on the scene for on 98.3
The Hematites started off the first quarter with an easy layup against the Patriots. Jenna Maki made her way to the free throw line gaining two points for the team. Shortly after, Ishpeming got a steal and had a strong take that helped them make their way to the free throw line, putting the team up by four. Ishpeming got another basket after a turnover from Westwood. Eagle got to the free throw line for the Hematites and sunk both. A quick first quarter and the Hematites lead. 11-8
The second quarter started with Isabelle Marta hitting a three for the Patriots to tie up the game. Eagle then had a strong take and got two points. Ishpeming got the rebound put back and got another basket. Hematites played great defense to help them raise their lead. Eagle had another great basket that forced Westwood to call a timeout. Maki got fouled on a shot and hit both free throws. Lily Swanson got the Hematites another basket before the end of the quarter. The Patriots fought back a hit a three to finish off the half. A great effort by both teams that kept it a close game heading into the half. 25-19
The Hematites started off the third with a steal a great post move by Maki. The Patriots didn’t back down and got themselves two points. Ishpeming added another two points to the board with some great ball movement by the team. Quickly after, Ishpeming put up a three point shot and got the make, widening their lead even more. Maki put up a jump shot from the lane and got two more point. Eagle had a pump fake from the three point line to a drive and got another basket. Lily Swanson had another basket for the Hematites that once again forced a timeout. Maki had a shot off the backboard that found its way in. Jenna Maki continued to have herself a game and got another two points. Maki got a steal and scored to end off the third Ishpeming came out strong in the second half and gained a lead of twenty-four. 45-21
The fourth quarter got started with the Patriots pushing back in attempts to get back in the game. The Hematites didn’t make that easy and got another basket. Maki got her eleventh steal of the game and pushed it up to Eagle who had a reverse layup for two points. Ishpeming continued to defend well, making it tough for Westwood to get to the basket. The Hematites had a great game to defeat the Patriots. 49-27
The Ishpeming Girls Basketball Team is back in action when they travel to Gwinn, Monday night at 7:15p.m.
