Ishpeming Hematites Host Iron Mountain Mountaineers

Ishpeming, MIOctober 14th, 2022 The Ishpeming Hematites were back at home following a win in Tomahawk, WI. This week they played host to the Iron Mountain Mountaineers at the Playgrounds. Mike Plourde and Bob Neadeau were on the call live on 98.3 WRUP!

Q1: The Ishpeming Hematites received the opening kick off with a 17yd return from Caden Louma. Ishpeming started their opening drive with the run game. Ethan Corp was able to break a 19yd run to cross midfield. Preston Gauthier followed with another big run off the edge to bring them to the Iron Mountain 29yd line. The Hematites kept chipping away until Gauthier found the edge for a 17yd touchdown. Corp converted the 2-point conversion to give Ishpeming the early lead.

Iron Mountain was able to move things on the ground with runs from Luke Wolfe and Bradon Farragh. The Mountaineers also got it done in the air as quarterback Joey Colavecchi was able to connect with  Matt Colavecchi for a 35yd reception. Farragh was able to cash in with a 2yd touchdown and their 2-point conversion was unsuccessful to make the score, 8-6 in favor of the Hematites.

Ishpeming took to the skies with a huge reception from Ethan Corp to Logan Hurkmans for a 28yd reception to close out the quarter.

Q2: The Hematites looked to cash in on their big play, and followed with another. Preston Gauthier able to pick up 20yds on the ground to start the quarter. Ishpeming found themselves knocking on the door once again after a big catch from Caden Louma put them inside the Iron Mountain 10yd line. The Mountaineer defense toughened up as they were able to keep Ishpeming from scoring.

Iron Mountain struck again after 83yds from Matt Colavecchi on the ground. The 2-point conversion was good as Bradon Whalstrom made the catch from Colavecchi to give the Mountaineers the lead, 14-8. Ishpeming failed to find end zone before the end of the half.

Q3: The Mountaineers opened the second half on offense with runs from Matt Colavecchi and Bradon Farragh. Luke Wolfe was able to push a pile forward to move the chains for Iron Mountain. The Hematite defense stepped their game up as Aiden Rajala was able to stop Wolfe the following play in the backfield. Ishpeming forced a fumble from Joey Colavecchi to bring the Hematite offense on the field for the first time in the half.

Following an Ishpeming turnover the Mountaineers turned it into points when Luke Wolfe broke off a 38yd run for a touchdown. A 2-point conversion was good to build the Iron Mountain lead to, 22-8.

Iron Mountain added on their lead with a short run from Farragh and the 2-point conversion was unsuccessful bringing the score to 28-8 in favor of the Mountaineers.

Q4:  The Hematites started the final quarter on offense. Ishpeming chipped away at the Mountaineer’s defense running their way down to the Iron Mountain 2yd line. The Mountaineer defense had another goal line stand, and kept the Hematites out of the endzone on all four downs.

The remainder of the game was largely back and forth with no big plays. Ishpeming struggled to regain any offensive rhythm, while Iron Mountain chewed the clock to hold on to their lead and the win.
