Ishpeming, MI – February 9th, 2022 – The Ishpeming Hematites boys basketball team went against the Westwood Patriots Wednesday night. The game was broadcast live on 98.3 WRUP!
1st Quarter – Entering the game was Jayce Kipling for the Hematites tip off. The Westwood team quickly began the game with a layup, at 2-0 for the Patriots. Parker Gauthier for the Hematites went up for a 3 pointer, working around the perimeter but was unsuccessful. A 3 pointer right outside the
line for the Patriots and the foul. The Hematites had more than one chance to set up a drive, however the Patriots kept it at 6-0. In the back the Hematites at 11-0 were trying to find their footing, still with the Patriots. Hematites have had some issues with communication in the past, but none of that was seen Wednesday evening. This quarter was all Westwood as they continued to grow their lead. Preston Gauthier finally broke the 0 at 13-3 with a successful foul shot. scored another 3 pointer and the crowd was loud and present too, bringing some more excitement in the gym. The Hematites, who haven’t been supporting any momentum thus far, went into the 2nd quarter at 24-3, for the Patriots.
2nd Quarter – Beginning the second quarter, the Hematites were searching for some momentum and the offensive lead. The second foul on the Patriots did not take them down a peg as they continued to dominate Ishpeming. Alex Sunberg attempted a long 3 pointer but it was no good. The team just could not catch up to the Patriots aggressive offense. The Westwood Patriots dominated pretty much the entire first half of Wednesday’s game. The Patriots responded with a drive with another score, still in the winning position at 30-11. The Westwood team had great offensive plays and wasn’t letting Ishpeming touch the ball. The failed basket shots cost the Hematites a huge lead, the Patriots at 37-13. At half time the Hematites were in a tough position and would definitely need more motivation going into the 3rd quarter. The Patriots at 42-13.
3rd Quarter – The Hematites and Patriots came into the second half flying with scoring. The game was back underway,h the Hematites with possession. With Ishpemings still finding their footing, they began closing the lead at 42-17, still continuing to dig themselves out of the hole. Far behind Ishpeming’s inbound Parker Gauthier was on the right side with a good 3 pointer, 51-20. This quarter of Wednesday’s game was just filled with Westwood dominance. Inbound for the Patriots was Zach Carlson who laid up for another point for Westwood. The Patriots really were just denying any offensive drive from the Hematites. Ryan Maki for the Hematites pushing forward with a successful shot and the foul for two free throws. Wednesday’s game seemed to be all Patriots with 51-22 at the end of the 3rd.
4th Quarter – In the last quarter of Wednesday’s game, the Hematites team started off with the possession. A lot of pressure on Ishpeming to close up the lead. Jayce Kipling with the Hematites took the ball up the right, scoring a 3 pointer, continuing to close that Patriots lead, 53-28. Ryan Maki, with 6 minutes left in the game, made a steal for the Hematites, but fouled for the Hematites. At 55-28, the 4th quarter continued with the Westwood offense. Blocked and pushed out of bounds was the Patriots, who have been demanding offensively. The Hematites were still climbing back up at 30 points, but were still having trouble with only 15 seconds left. The Patriots completed their victory against the Hematites, at 65-33.
