Gwinn, MI – January 14, 2020 –The Ishpeming Hematite girls basketball team went up against the Gwinn Modeltowners on Tuesday night. Tyler Young and Bob Nadeau were in on the excitement on 98.3 WRUP.
The game started off with a bang. The Gwinn Modeltowners had the ball in beginning, until Hematite Rylee Harris manged to get her hands on the ball and scored a three pointer. Hematite Olivia Corp followed behind with two points 5-0. Ishpeming senior Kayla Koski worked hard to keep Gwinn away. Ishpeming girl Emma Poirier worked her way inside with a three pointer 8-0. Gwinn ninth grader Lena Pleaugh found an opening and went up with a three pointer 8-3. Hematite Rebekah Loman made two free throws raising the score 10-3.
Hematites started off the second quarter with the ball. They did not have the ball for long. Modeltowner Marissa Delmont grabbed the ball and went up and scored a three pointer 10-6, however the Hemmatites were not stopping they manged to answer with a three pointer 13-6.Poirier showed good use of the backboard and scored two points 15-6. Tia Mattila was quick to follow in Poirier’s foot steps Mattila scored a three points for her Hemmatites 18-6. The Modeltowners were struggling to get past the Ishpeming girls. Modeltowner Tianna Taylor found a way inside and bounced one in 18-8. The Modeltowners quickly found another opening and scored 18-11. Poirier kept moving on the court and went up and scored 20-11. Modeltowner Emily Curtice ended the second quarter with two free throws 20-13.
It started raining three pointers in the third quarter. Poirier scored a three pointer right away 23-13. Corp passed the ball on to Harris . Harris scored a three pointer 26-13. Modeltowner Eliina Miilu answered with a three pointer 26-16. Hematite Poirier kept herself and the score moving with two points 28-16. Ishpeming Junior Madisyn Mead earner her first points of the game 30-16. Harris followed with a smooth three pointer 33-16. Gwinn Modeltowner Curtice manged to get a rebound and scored 33-18. Mead worked her way back in, but failed to make a shot. Mead quickly received her own rebound and scored 35-18. The Modelltowners managed to score a couple more points 35-20. Mead decided she was going to keep things going with a two pointer 37-20. The Modeltowners started to play catch up at the end of the 3rd quarter 37-24.
The pressure was on in the fourth quarter. Poirier started off with two free throws, made both baskets 39-24. Poirier was not giving up she was flying across the court and scored 41-27 . Modeltowner Marissa Delmont went up left handed and scored 41-29. Miilu bumped up the sore with her free throws 41-31. Hematite Mead was also strong with a free throw 42-29. Curtice put a three pointer in the hoop 42-34. Curtice kept getting the ball in the basket 43-36. With four minutes left Poirier found herself at the free throw line she made two buckets 45-36. Koski received a second foul. Miilu went to the free throw line and scored both shots 45-38. Hemmatite Matilla found her opening and went up with a three 48-38. With less than two minutes left a time out was called. Koski came back strong with a two pointer 50-38. Modeltowner Pleaugh worked her way inside with a three 50-42. With a little over a minute left on the clock Poirier scored 51-43. Modeltowner Megan Ruokolainen fouled out, they took the thirty seconds. Corp manged to make a free throw. Gwinn worked their way in with one more basket 52-44. Right before the buzzer Poirier got in two more free throws 54-44. The Hematites were proud to have taken home the win. 54-44
