Very Close Game for the Ishpeming Boys Basketball Team and the Manistique Emeralds, 49-48


Ishpeming, MI January 10, 2020 – The Ishpeming Hematite boys basketball team took on the Manistique Emeralds. The JV Hematites won 62-28 against the Emeralds, the varsity Hematites were hoping for the same ending. Tyler Young and Bob Nadeau were on the air keeping fans posted on 98.3 WRUP.

  The first quarter flew and so did Manistique senior Schyler Andersen. Andersen scored a three pointer right away 3-0. Breck Bell bounced one in and got the Hematites on the scoreboard 6-2.  The Hematites and the Emerlds struggled to get by each other.  Hematite John Corkin found an opening and got the ball in 6-4. Hematite Chase Jensen was quick to follow behind and tie up the game 6-6.  The Hematites kept responding they managed to get a three pointer in 9-6.  Emerald Andersen tied the game back up with a basket 9-9. Bell went back up with another basket and scored 11-9.
  The second quarter started off with a basket from Hematite Jacob Kugler 13-9. Bell went up with a smooth layup 14-9. Hematite Jayce Kipling followed in his teammates footsteps and scored a bucket 16-9. Kugler was not stopping he put more points on the board 20-9. Hematite Senior Ben Pruett made an appearance on the court with a great three pointer 23-9. Emerald Mark Block went to the free throw line and added some points 23-11. Mark Block continued to score 24-15. Pruett put his free throws in the basket 26-15. Schyler Andersen shot up a nice three pointer 26-18. Hematite Jensen answered with a bucket 29-18. Andersen was not giving up on his three pointers he scored another 29-21. Block was quick to follow with a basket 29-21. Jensen was not letting the Emeralds catch up to quickly he scored right before the clock ran out 31-26.
  The Emeralds were trying not to back down in the third quarter. The Hematites scored right a away 36-33. The Emeralds were pushing though they responded with two buckets 33-30. Emerald Jordan St.John passed the ball to Andersen. Andersen was lucky with a nice shot and scored 33-32. Andersen was not stopping. The Hematites and Emeralds got tied back up 34-34. Andersen kept shuffling across the court and scored again 36-34. Hematite Senior Swanson tied the game back up quickly, he went up with a basket 36-36. Swanson broke that tie very fast with a three pointer 39-36. The Manistique Emeralds were not giving up they followed right behind. Andersen went the length of the court and scored right before the buzzer, he scored only using one hand 39-38.
  The Emeralds managed to get ahead right away in the fourth quarter 41-39. Manistique senior Block scored a two pointer 43-39.  Swanson raised the Hematites up with two free throws 43-41.  Emerald Bryce Blixt went up and scored 45-41. Jensen quickly got his hands on the ball and bounced it in 45-43.
The pressure was on for Hematite Corkin as he scored a free throw 45-44. The Hematites used up all of their timeouts. The Hematite fans and the players were very anxious. Andersen missed his first free throw with a little over two left minutes on the clock, but he managed to get a second one 46-44. Swanson was not letting the Emeralds get away with anything he scored a two pointer 46-46. Swanson still was not stopping he went back up with another two pointer 48-46. The Emeralds called a timeout with a little over a minute left.  Emerald Blixt came back hot from the timeout and scored 48-48. Swanson was still working hard, with fifteen seconds left he bounced a free throw off the glass and in 49-48. With just ten seconds left the Emeralds called a timeout, hearts were racing. The Emeralds could not come back strong enough. The Hematites won a very dramatic win!
