Gladstone, MI – January 2nd, 2020–The Ishpeming Hematite irls traveled to Gladstone for their first game of 2020. Tyler Young and Bob Nadeau were in on the action on 98.3 WRUP.
Senior Maddie Ahlgren from Gladstone started the game off with a layup scoring two points for her team. Gladstone Brave Megan Crow managed to follow with a basket raising the score up 4-0. Crow towered over the other girls at 6’3″. Ishpeming Hematite Emma Poirier pushed her way inside and bounced one off the backboard into the basket getting Ishpeming on the board 4-2. Ishpeming Junior Rebekah Loman showed great defense on the court. Hematite Madisyn Mead scored at the end of the first quarter tying the game up 5-5.
The second quarter started off with the Hematites and the Braves neck and neck. The Braves sought an opportunity to break the tie with two points 7-5. The Hematites struggled to get back into the game. Gladstone Brave Andie Balenger scored a two pointer raising the score up to 11-5. Emma Poirier gained momentum got the ball in the basket 11-7. Brave Ahna Larson made an appearance on to the court scoring a point moving the score up 12-9. Balenger threw a point in at the end of the quarter. Right before the buzzer Hematite Kayla Koski shot a three pointer 13-12.
Maddie Ahlgren started the third quarter off with a pass to Crow. Crow scored a bucket 14-12. Hematite Poirier moved quick on the court and scored a two pointer 15-14. The Gladstone Braves managed to get a great hold on the Hematies scoring point after point increasing the score to 24-14. Ishpeming Hematite Koski worked her way up the court passing a quick ball to Mead. Mead scored two baskets 24-17. Koski worked hard to block the Braves. Ishpeming Hematite Poirier sped things up on the court and scored 24-20. The Gladstone Braves were quick to respond with two points 26-20. Gladstone called a timeout with thirty seconds left in the quarter. After the timeout Crow came back strong scoring another two pointer for her teammates 28-20.
In the last quarter things began to move fast. The Braves managed to start off scoring more baskets, but the Hematite girls were responding quickly. The heat and the battle was on 31-25. Hematite Poirier worked her way up the court allowing her team to catch up 31-28. Gladstone Brave Crow scored free throws 34-28. The Hematites struggled to block the Braves from scoring, the Braves kept getting in 36-28. Poirier started moving quick on her feet again scoring anther two pointer for her girls 36-30. Hematite Tia Matilla followed behind Poirier with a three pointer 36-33. The Gladstone Braves called a timeout with less than two minutes on the clock. Crow flew in after the timeout scoring a two pointer 38-33. Brave Maddie Ahlgren followed scoring more points for the braves 41-33. With less than a minute left on the clock Hematite Poirier fouled out of the game, even though she did carry the team, scoring nineteen points for the night. Koski worked her way in and scored, however it was not enough to win the game. The Braves took the win 42-35.
