Gwinn, MI – December 18th, 2019 –The Ishpeming Hematites traveled to Gwinn on Wednesday night to compete against the Gwinn Modeltowners. Both teams were looking to accomplish their first win of the season. Tyler Young and Bob Nadeua were there to keep fans posted on 98.3 WRUP.
No one was was wasting time in the first quarter. Gwinn Modeltowner James Harnick got his team on the scoreboard immediately with a three point shot. Hematite senior Jacob Kugler was quick to respond with a bucket. Hematites Breck Bell and Kugler showed great teamwork passing the ball back and forth across the court. Both players were able to score points for their team. Modeltowner Harnick manged to get a nice layup in. Ishpeming Hematite Chase Jensen was back in action and was able to score a couple points. Jensen recovered from last weeks injury. Gwinn players Harnick and Caleb Anderson were not stopping they were making basket after basket, but the Hematites were not backing down. Otto Swanson floated the ball into the basket raising the score up to 13-10. Moddeltowner Nick Lifeford came in hot with a three pointer tying up the game 13-13. Bell picked thing up and broke the tie, but not for long. Modeltowner Tristan Jancsi bounced one off the glass tying the game back up 15-15, that is until Hematite John Corkin moved in with a three pointer at the end of the first quarter adjusting the score 18-15.
Things were moving fast in the second quarter. Modeltowner lightford scored a smooth three pointer tying the game back up 18-18. Harnick allowed Gwinn to get ahead with a three point shot 21-18. Chase Jensen and Breck Bell both gained momentum and were scoring baskets for the Ishpeming Hematies. The first half ended with the Ishpeming Hematites on top 30-25.
The basketball court became a heated battle in the second half. Kugler, Swanson, and Bell kept moving past the Gwinn Modeltowners. Swanson manged to get three offensive rebounds. The score board was changing fast 38-29. Bell accomplished a nice lay up 45-37. Modeltowner Lightford also came through with a nice layup 45-39. The pressure was on for Gwinn and Ishpeming as they were tied up again 47-47. Hematite Ben Pruett became alive at the end of the fourth quarter. Pruett manged to score two points 49-47. Harnick attempted a three point shot, but it was no good. Gwinn took a full timeout with only fifteen seconds left on the clock. Modeltowner Mastin Love was able to score two points after the timeout 50-49. The clock was ticking with less than ten seconds left on the clock, hearts were racing. Pruett quickly passed the ball to Bell. Bell scored the final points of the game. The Ishpeming Hematites took home their first win of the season 51-50.
