Ishpeming, Michigan – February 22nd, 2016 – Mike Plourde and Bob Nadeau were in Ishpeming, MI for the Ishpeming Hematites boys game against the Iron Mountain Mountaineers on 98.3 WRUP and streaming live at WRUP.com. The Hematites looked to keep their season going strong, and Mike and Bob brought you their stats and predictions during the Honor Credit Union pregame show!
It was sure to be a great game between the Ishpeming Hematite boys and the Iron Mountain Mountaineers, as the Mountaineers came into the game with only one loss on the season and ranked as number 1 in the coach’s poll. Iron Mountain took the opening tip off, and they were able to score the first points of the game on a short jump shot. Despite having a broken bone in his face, Luke Kuliu got the first two points of the game for the Hematites, and he was fouled for one extra point as well. Despite trailing 0-4 after the first minute of play, Ishpeming took an 8-5 lead with only three minutes left in the first. Iron Mountain made some ground up however, and at the end of the first quarter, Ishpeming led with a score of 12-10.
The Ishpeming Hematites got the ball to start the second quarter, but Iron Mountain quickly stole the ball and tied the score at 12. With six minutes left in the first half, the score remained tied at 14-14, and Coach Olson did his best to rekindle Ishpeming’s confidence from the first quarter. Jaren Kipling gave Ishpeming a two point lead when he drained a long jump shot off of a great feed from Luke Kuliu. As the first half ticked-down, it remained a very close game. Hart Holmgren had a nice play when he threaded himself through multiple defenders and made a tough layup with one minute remaining. Despite some great play, Ishpeming went into the half trailing by a score of 22-26.

The game proved to be a difficult challenge for the Ishpeming Hematites, as they trailed the Iron Mountain Mountaineers by four points at the half. The Mountaineers were able to go on a nine-point scoring run, preventing Ishpeming from scoring for the first two minutes of the quarter. Iron Mountain continued to extend their scoring run to 13 unanswered points at the halfway point of the quarter. The Hematites were able to make some ground up before the end of the quarter, but Ishpeming still trailed 30-41.
Hart Holmgren continued to have a great game for the Ishpeming Hematites, and he scored all the points for the Hematites in the third quarter. Thomas Finegan also worked hard to bring Ishpeming back into the game, and he had multiple impressive feeds that led directly to points in the fourth quarter. The action in the gym continued to increase as Ishpeming worked down Iron Mountain’s lead to only four points with just minutes remaining in the game. Iron Mountain retained the lead with one minute to play in the game, but Ishpeming was doing everything they could to take the win. Despite their best efforts, the Hematites were unable to overcome the Mountaineers.
