Ishpeming, Michigan – February 4th, 2016 – Mike Plourde and Bob Nadeau were in Ishpeming, MI for the Ishpeming Hematites game against the Gwinn ModelTowners on 98.3 WRUP and WRUP.com. The Hematites looked to keep their season going strong, and Mike and Bob brought you their stats and predictions during the Honor Credit Union pregame show!
The Gwinn ModelTowners took the opening tip-off, and after a quick setup, they scored the first points of the game. The Ishpeming Hematites were down multiple key players, and it wasn’t until Gwinn had scored eight points that they Hematites finally got on the board. Despite the slow start, Khora Swanson began to close the scoring gap when she drained a long three-pointer midway through the quarter. Mariah Austin weaved her way through multiple Gwinn players late in the quarter and scored a quick two before the buzzer sounded. The first quarter ended with a score of 10-13, with Ishpeming trailing slightly.
As the second quarter started, the Ishpeming Hematites barely trailed the Gwinn ModelTowners. However, Gwinn was able to use their superior size to wear down the Hematites, and the ModelTowners extended their lead with a six point scoring run early in the quarter. With a complete swing in momentum, the Hematites fought their way back and tied the score with two minutes left in the quarter. It was a battle all the way to the buzzer, but Ishpeming finally worked their way into the lead, but only by two points before the quarter ended.

The second half started off much the same as the first, with the Gwinn ModelTowners taking the opening tip-off. It was a tough battle, and Gwinn retook the lead less than a minute into the quarter. The second half was filled with scoring, and Khora Swanson of the Ishpeming Hematities nailed her third three-pointer of the night off of a great feed with four minutes left in the fourth. With just minutes left in the third, the ModelTowners again took advantage of their height and tied the score. However, by the end of the quarter, Ishpeming was back in the lead by a score of 39-35.
At the start of the fourth quarter, the Ishpeming Hematites held the lead over the Gwinn ModelTowners, but only by four points. Madigan Johns did a great job for the Hematites, both on offense and defense. She was integral to stopping Gwinn’s scoring runs, and Madigan had multiple amazing assists throughout the game. The Hematites were able to continue their excellent play, but Gwinn brought the score to within four points with over a minute left to play. It was 47-40 in favor of the Hematites with only one minute left to play, however, Gwinn had several fouls that they could use to shut down the Hematites. It was a tough battle right down to the wire, but the Hematites were able to hold off the ModelTowners to take the win.
