Ishpeming MI – 03/10/2021 – The Hematites Girls varsity basketball team look for their fourth win hosting the Gremlins here on WRUP 98.3
The game started with a fast 7-0 run from the Gremlins putting them in an early lead. Harris and Maki were fast to respond and shrink the lead to 9-4. The first quarter ended with the gremlins shooting 53% and a score of 15-9.
After an early three by Houghton to start the second quarter, Maki and Koski kept the Hematites from falling behind any farther ending the half with a score of 34-22. Both teams attempted 25 shots in the first half with Houghton shooting 60% and Ishpeming shooting 36%.
The third quarter was a lower scoring affair than the first half, both defenses got in their rhythm and the game slowed down. The score after three quarters was 41-27 with the Hematites behind by 14.
The scoring picked back up in the fourth quarter with Nyman and Deloughary picking up momentum and bringing the Gremlins lead down to 8 with 3:37 in the fourth quarter. Wickstrom fouled out, she is the only Gremlin reaching 6ft, giving Ishpeming a better chance offensively. Unfortunately a wide open three by the Gremlins Peterson killed the momentum. The Hematites just never managed to make up the scoring deficit from the first half with both teams scoring 20 points in the second half.
