Iron River, MI – March 1st, 2021 – The Hemitites traveled to Iron River Monday night for a girls basketball match-up against the Wykons of West Iron County on 98.3 WRUP. The Hemitites, coming off of a close loss against Ewen-Trout Creek, were looking to get on the winning track.

First Half: The Hemitites came out swinging to start the game, sending home three 3-pointers to put Ishpeming up by a quick nine points. West Iron would take advantage of a scoring opportunity given to them by landing a couple of free-throws to close the gap, 9-2. Jenna Maki would close out the first quarter with a shot plus the foul and make it a 3-point play with :05 left.
West Iron County was able to get themselves in the bonus early on in the quarter, but Ishpeming’s Hannah DeLoughran would send home her third 3-pointer to put the Hemitites up, 17-5. The fouls would start to prove costly for the Hemitites with West Iron closing the gap to under ten points.

Rylee Harris was able add on another three points for the Hemitites and bring their lead back to ten. The Wykons were able to put some more points on the board via the free-throw line.
Halftime: Ishpeming 22, West Iron County 11
Second Half: West Iron County started out the second half adding three points on to their total. Hemitite Hannah DeLoughary responded with a 3-pointer of her own and keeping the lead at 11, 25-14. It was important for Ishpeming to keep their fouls low in the second half with various players in foul trouble.
The Hemitites would go on an 8-0 run and go up by as much as 16 against the Wykons. The second quarter would come to an end when Jenna Maki threw up a 3-pointer from the right wing that landed and brought the lead to, 38-21.

There would be no real scoring in the fourth quarter. Both teams went back and forth during the final eight minutes. Ishpeming did come out on top in the scoring category for the quarter with only free-throws and would also come away with their second win of the year.
Final: Ishpeming 45, West Iron County 31
