Gwinn, MI – March 9th, 2020 – The Ishpeming boys basketball traveled to Gwinn Monday night, the Hematites took on the Modeltowners as they looked to start their run for the Breslin Center in district playoff action. The road would be short for the Hematites however, Gwinn would take this game, 61-53.
FIRST QUARTER
Jumping into the action, at the four minute mark, Gwinn would lead 10-6 in the first quarter when Jacob Kugler got his second foul, he would head to the bench as he would be a key player in this game.
With a minute left in the first, Breck Bell would make a couple of free-throws to make it 12-8, Otto Swanson would follow up with a layup to make the score 12-10 in favor of the Modeltowners. After the first quarter, Gwinn would lead by four, 14-10.
SECOND QUARTER
Gwinn would maintain the slight lead through the first half of the second quarter quarter, the score would be 19-16 as both sides played through early foul trouble.
Griffin Argall would draw a foul while making a nice shot with three minutes to play in the half, he would covert the three-point-play, Ishpeming would still trail 21-19. Gwinn would respond with a basket and with two minutes in the half, Gwinn was still holding onto the four point advantage. They would take that lead into the half, 25-21.
THIRD QUARTER
Griffin Argall would start the second half with a deep three-pointer to cut the Gwinn lead to one point, Reid Hill would respond with a short jumper, Argall would go down and immediately tie the game with another deep shot. Gwinn’s Jacob Harnick would also respond with a three-pointer, he would make another three-pointer after a quick Ishpeming possession, 35-29, Gwinn.
The quarter would see both teams get hot from the field, Ishpeming almost matched their first half total in just the third quarter, Gwinn would lead going into the fourth, 46-38.
FOURTH QUARTER
After Gwinn made the first shot of the quarter, Ishpeming would start to make a run at a 10-point Gwinn lead. After a couple of quick shots, the Hematites would find themselves down only five with six minutes to play in the contest.At the four minute mark, Ishpeming would head into the bonus, their shooting from the charity stripe would be far different from their last game where they shot almost 90%. They were 6-18 from the line with three minutes to play, Hematites down, 53-47.
Gwinn would hit eight straight free throws in the final minute to go to extend their lead, 61-53, that score would hold strong, Gwinn takes this one.
