Negaunee, MI – September 27, 2019 – The Ishpeming Hematites traveled to Miner’s Field for a fan-filled rivalry game this Friday evening. These two schools have a long history of games dating all the way back to the 1800s. The Hematites started their season strong, but lost to Westwood last week in Ishpeming. With a new field and fresh rival opposition, the Hematites have their work cut out for them tonight. Remember you can always catch the game on 98.3 WRUP.
The game started off very slow. John Corkin sustained an upper-body injury, taking a short recovery break. With less than a minute left in the first quarter, Erik Salminen zipped past two unprepared Hematites for a 51-yard touchdown reception. The Miners went with a good kick, and got the extra point. Negaunee scored first in this stalemate game, setting the tone for the rest of the first half.
Later in the second quarter, the Miners scored another touchdown with a kick. Behind 14 points, the Hematites needed to make some moves if they wanted to beat their historic contender. Both teams had already used up their time outs this half. Yearning to score, Otto Swanson made a touchdown for the Hematites wrapping up the first half 14-6 Miners.
The Miners dug deep in the second half, scoring two more touchdowns both with an extra point landing them at 28-6. Time ran down to 11 seconds in the third quarter before Otto Swanson got to business. He swiftly navigated his way into the end zone, scoring his team a touchdown and two-point conversion. Swanson’s touchdown dragged the Hematites up to 14-28.
Firing back fast, the Miners touched down as well. Scoring 20-34, the Hematites would have to play like mad to make this one up. This would not be the case. The Miners continued digging and scored another touchdown. The game ended 40-20 Miners.
