Iron River, MI – January 14th, 2019 – The Ishpeming Hematites girls were facing a tough West Iron County Wykons on another road game Monday night, but Tyler was feeling better, so he joined Bob once again in the broadcast booth to bring you all the Hematites action on 98.3 WRUP and streaming live at WRUP.com/Stream!
West Iron County had a definite size advantage over the Ishpeming Hematites, and the Wykons took the opening tip-off and scored the first two point of the game on that same drive. At 5:00 left in the first, the Hematites took their first lead of the game with a score of 3-2, but West Iron Co. jumped right back on top by a single point only seconds later. The score was a 7-5 West Iron Co. lead with just under three minutes to play in the first, and Ishpeming was barely hanging with their opponents. It was 14-7 for the Wykons with one minute to play, and the Hematites were forced to use some early fouls to stifle West Iron County.

The Ishpeming Hematites seemed distracted during their first quarter against the Wykons, and it continued into the second. Just two minutes into the quarter, it was 19-9, and Ishpeming just couldn’t keep control of the ball. Throughout much of the second, Ishpeming’s score was doubled by the Wykons. As the final minute of the first half approached, West Iron County led 26-12, and Ishpeming would had some serious ground to make up.

The Ishpeming Hematites came out of the locker room with new energy as they scored the first points of the half. However, fouls were adding up quickly, and more than one Ishpeming player was in foul trouble early in the quarter. It was 29-21 with 3:3o remaining in the third, and the Hematites were slowly working at closing the gap to West Iron Co. The Wykons started to give up some of their fouls, allowing the Hematites an opportunity for some free throws, but Ishpeming went zero-for-seven free throws early in the game. With one minute in the quarter, West Iron Co. firmly grasped the advantage, but Ishpeming wasn’t out of the game.

There was not much time remaining in the game for the Ishpeming Hematites to take the lead, and they trailed by ten points after a quick Wykons’ basket. The Hematites trailed by eight points with just under six minutes left, but they were doing everything in their power to put the ball in the hoop. A Wykons three-pointer brought their lead up to 12 points with 5:05 remaining, and Ishpeming was forced to use a timeout to gather their thoughts. West Iron County did a good job of stalling the game by controlling the ball while in their possession, and the Hematites were forced to use fouls to break up their plays. This gave the Wykons opportunities at free throws, and they took full advantage of those shots to extend their lead. It was 44-33 with just over three minutes left in the game, and things looked dire for the Hematites, even though they were clearly giving their all. Despite putting up a tough fight, the Ishpeming Hematites just couldn’t overtake the Wykons, who handed the Negaunee Miners girls basketball team their only loss earlier in the season.
