Gwinn, MI – October 26, 2018 – Modern warriors warm up amidst the rain-covered field. They ready their bodies for the beginning of a football game to remember. The Ishpeming Hematites defeated the Gwinn Modeltowners in the first game of the playoff season, 52 – 6. The week before, they triumphed over the Bark River-Harris Broncos, with a score of 54 – 13.
An exciting first half lies ahead. Not thirty seconds into the game, Matthew Traywick ran 88 yards to the end zone with “blazing speed,” as Mike Plourde described it. Gavin Sundberg picked up the two point conversion from there. Drake Sundberg took a hand off by his brother Gavin, easily dodging the opposition with grace. Gavin Sundberg got the two point conversion during this play as well. Hunter Smith had an amazing 56 yard run, cutting left and right, then up the left sideline with 7.5 seconds on the clock, the Modeltowners just couldn’t get a hold of him. Drake Sundberg earned them the two point conversion. The final score of the first half was 24 – 0.
The second quarter was just as exciting as the first with Gavin Sundberg running a 15 yard touchdown with 10:05 on the clock. “The linemen made that [touchdown] look easy,” commented our announcer Mike Plourde once again. The hand off went to Traywick for the two point conversion. Again, Gavin Sundberg brought the ball to the end zone 48 yards. He got through the opposition’s defense with great blocking from his team. Traywick was able to successfully achieve the two point conversion. At the end, Braedon Arsenault got the last score of the quarter with no two point conversion. The final tally was 46 – 0.
With a running clock at the beginning of the quarter, the Modeltowners were desperate to bring their numbers up. Drake Asgard gets the opportunity of a lifetime with this next play. With 7:46 on the clock, he ran 45 yards, recovered a fumble, and ran towards the left sideline. With his speed, there was no way anyone would catch him. This was the only touchdown during this quarter, bringing the score to 52 – 0. Finally, with 6:08 to go, Tucker Taylor of the Modeltowners ran 16 yards into the end zone, getting his team on the board. Unfortunately, this made little difference for this team, as they ran out of time, the final score being 52 – 6.
Congratulations the Ishpeming Hematites, this allows them to advance forward into their second game in the playoffs against West Iron County Wykons.
