Mike and Bob brought you their stats and predictions during the Honor Credit Union pregame show!
The Ishpeming Hematites won the opening coin toss, and Coach Olsen decided to defer the decision to the Norway Knights. The Knights received the opening kick off, but Ishpeming was able to shut them down on their first set of downs. On the Hematites first drive, Ozzy Corp was able to score a touchdown on a nice run to make the early score 8-0 after a good two-point attempt. Ishpeming continued their strong defensive play from the Knights first drive when they stopped Norway from scoring on their second drive. Luke Kuliu had multiple long pass receptions that put Ishpeming into scoring position. Halen Carello scored on a short run, and after the two point attempt, the score was 16-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Norway started the second quarter by completing a long pass which put them into Ishpeming Hematites territory, but the Hematites were able to stop the Knights and gain control of the ball on downs. Penalties were a major problem for Ishpeming, with several penalties in the first half of play which hampered their ability to control the ball. Ozzy Corp was easily able to score again thanks to a huge hole created by the Hematites offensive line to make the score 24-0 after the successful two point attempt. Nick Comment made a great catch through some strong defense to put the Hematites back into scoring position after stopping the Knights on their previous drive. On the same drive, Ishpeming was able to score another touchdown on the run to make the score 32-0 after the good two point attempt. The first half ended with a score of 32-0 on 98.3 WRUP and WRUP.com.
The Ishpeming Hematites’ Nick Comment opened the second half of play by running 50+ yards after breaking three tackles and receiving some excellent blocking on a hand-off from Issac Olson. However, the Norway Knights were able to stop the Hematites drive on downs thanks to some great defensive play. Halfway through the quarter, the Hematites fumbled the ball, which gave control to Norway at the Ishpeming 15-yard line. The Hematites own Thomas Finegan was able to intercept the ball in their end zone for a touch-back. When the Hematites took over on the 20-yard line, Issac Olson scored a touchdown on a huge 80-yard run to make the 40-0 with just minutes left in the third quarter. The third quarter ended with a score of 40-0.
The final quarter of play opened with the Norway Knights in control of the ball, but the Ishpeming Hematites were able to take over on downs at the Ishpeming 48-yard line. Both teams’ defense came on strong in the fourth quarter, with no scoring through the first part of the fourth quarter. The Hematites’ Matt Maki had some great plays, but the entire Ishpeming team played very well in the second half. The penalties that the Hematites had in the first half of play were almost non-existent in the second half, except for a false start midway through the fourth. The game ended with a score of 40-0 in favor of the Hematites, only on 98.3 WRUP and WRUP.com!
