Ishpeming, MI – February 27th, 2018 – The Ishpeming Hematites Boys High School Basketball team took on the West Iron County Wykons this evening in Ishpeming winning the game with a final score of 54-53.
The Ishpeming Hematites Boys took the court tonight to face off against the West Iron County Wykons this evening. These two teams seldom meet so it was expected to be an interesting game of basketball.
Wykons took the first basket of the night in the first frame, but the Hematites followed back with a layup evening the score. The Wykons pushed a 10-4 lead halfway through the first. Hart Holmgren laid in a 3-point shot evening out the score and Hart Holmgren and Hunter Smith pushed the Hematites into the lead and then with a stunning buzzer beater Hart Holmgren laid in a 3-point shot finishing out the frame 18-14 Hematites.
West Iron opened the second quarter with a 3-point shot. Darius Yohe responded with a Hematites 3 shortly after. A tough back and forth followed and a series of fouls allowed the Wykons to catch up to the Hematites with free throws, but Ishpeming held on to their lead and finished up the first half with a score of 32-27.
The second half was very tight. Hart Holmgren had a lot of difficulty getting the ball and putting him shots, Iron County played a very tight defense and kept the Hematites from using that major offensive cannon they call Holmgren and kept the score relatively close to tied, they finished the third quarter with the Hematites leading by 1 with a score of 43-42. 
The final frame was a nail biter, both teams pushed a tied game towards the closing minutes where every move could of meant winning or losing. The game narrowed down to a tied game of 53-53 with 13.9 seconds on the clock, Darius Yohe inbounded the ball to Gaven Sundberg, who passed to hart Holmgren who was then fouled by West County. Hart went to the line and put up 1 for 2 free throws taking the lead over the Wykons. With 2 seconds on the clock West County looked to take the lead but could not deliver on the final shot and lost the game to the Hematites for a final score of 54-53 Ishpeming.
Hart Holmgren led the team scoring with 19, followed by Darius Yohe with 14. Hart Holmgren moves to tie third place in Ishpeming all-time scoring.
