L’Anse, MI – February 5th, 2018 – The Ishpeming Hematites Boys High School basketball team met the L’Anse Purple Hornets this evening scoring the W with a final score of 78-30.
The evening starting out with perhaps a foreshadowing of the game to come with the Hematites JV boys dominating the game 79-13 with a running clock at the start of the third frame. The Varsity Boys took court in hopes to replicate that success Monday night.
The Hematites took court and made the first score in the opening seconds of the first frame, but the Hornets soon after answered with a 3. There was a fierce back and forth between both times and the frame ended out with a score of 17-9 Hematites thanks to some quick work by Hart Holmgren at the buzzer to push their lead up to 8.
The second frame was all Hematites, all the live long day. Hart Holmgren and Dondre Yohe piled in he baskets and pushed a serious lead over the Purple Hornets raising serious question as to whether or not the game would push a running clock in the third quarter. Ishpeming bested L’Anse 42-17 at the end of the first half.
Late in the third the Hematites pushed up the tempo against L’Anse and Hart Holmgren buried in 3 3-point shots and pushed the Hematites score to 61-20 with a minute to go in the third initiating the running clock to follow the JV’s lead-all that remained was to match or beat the JV score of 79. the third frame finished out 65-25 Hematites.
The final frame finished out quickly, the Hematites made quick work of the Hornets and ended the game just shy of matching the JV Hematites with a final score of 78-30. Hart Holmgren lead the team in scoring with 31 points, followed by Darius Yohe with 16 and Dondre Yohe with 15.
