Ishpeming Hematites Boys’ assail Westwood Patriots for victory 64-56

Mike and Bob are ready to call

Ishpeming, MI – December 8th, 2017 – The Hematites Boys’ Basketball team took center court the start of this game with redemption in mind after their narrow loss to the Gladstone Braves this last Tuesday. Expectations and energy were high for the boys second game and took home victory 0-0 showing the incredible skills of some very talented young people, and the Hematites were not to be counted out.

The day after the Hematites Girl’s team fired back against Gladstone taking an absolute victory, the boys team faced down Westwood with only one guard, so the Hematites would be leaning on Gavin Sunberg to lead the team against the Hematites rival team.

The first frame started very back and forth between these two teams, matching baskets both teams remained neck and neck, with Dondre Yohe sinking a big 3 point shot early on. Ishpeming maintained the lead 15-12 coming to the end of the quarter but had difficulty maintaining the momentum approaching the half, but with the help of Dondre Yohe pulled ahead of the Patriots breaking a brief tie followed by Jaden Tucker taking advantage of a 5 on 4 layup basket. Gavin Sunberg put up a big 3 at the end of the second and put the Hematites ahead 27-24.

Ishpeming played a strong sustained game for the duration of the third, with Sunberg putting up a basket early in the frame. The rival teams fired back at one another matching baskets and driving their points to within a single field goal back and forth with the lead, but the Hematites pushed the Patriots back into the end of the third 44-40. The final quarter played out much like the entirety of the game, with an exchange between teams pushing the score to one up the other. Late in the frame the Hematites carried a 6 point lead with 3 minutes left and fouled the Patriots multiple times allowing them to close the gap to a 3 point game, however Gavin Sunberg put up some major shots and brought the Hematites 6 ahead, and going on to score 2 free throws running out the clock and claiming victory over the Patriots 64-56.

The Ishpeming Hematites Girl’s team will take on Westwood December 11th, game starts at 7:30 on 98.3 WRUP and wrup.com/stream
