Boys Basketball: Ishpeming Hematites Roll Past Iron Mountain 65-47 – 2/3/17

Ishpeming, MichiganFebruary 3, 2017 – The Ishpeming Hematites got a huge win against the Iron Mountain Mountaineers in Ishpeming on Friday night.  The Mountaineers came in as one of the best teams in the Mid Peninsula Conference as well as the Upper Peninsula with a record of 12-1. 

The Hematites got off to a fast start and never looked back.  Ishpeming’s defense shut down the potent offensive attack of the Mountaineers right from the tip. The Hematites used their strong defense to get out to a 10-1 run to begin the contest.  The Hematites hit 3-pointers on three straight possession during one stretch and lead by 9 points heading into the 2nd quarter. 

The 2nd quarter was a back and forth battle between the two teams.  Iron Mountain tried to claw their way back into the game, but the Hematites always had an answer.  Junior forward Dondre Yohe had 6 out of Ishpeming’s 10 points in the quarter as they took a 28-20 lead into halftime.

The third quarter came up all Hematites.  Ishpeming began on a 6-0 run to extend their lead to 14.  The Hematites held Iron Mountain to just 5 third quarter points and were able to pull away because of it. Ishpeming got balanced scoring throughout the quarter to dump in 17. They took a 20 point lead, 45-25, into the final 8 minutes. 

The game seemed to be in the bag for the Hematites as the quarter got started.  But Iron Mountain hit 3-pointers on consecutive possessions to begin the final frame.  Ishpeming got baskets from Jaden Tucker and Hart Holmgren to stop the run.  When a Marcus Johnson 3-pointer cut the Hematites lead to 15, the Hematites went on a 8-0 run to seal the deal.  Ishpeming had 3 players score in double figures. Hart Holmgren lead the way with 24, Dondre Yohe dumped in 18, and Jaden Tucker added 12 as the Hematites defeated the Mountaineers 65-47.

The win improves the Hematites to 6-6 overall and 4-3 in the Mid Peninsula Conference.  The hematites look to continue their win streak when they take on the Manistique Emeralds on Wednesday, February 8th. We’ll have all the action for you on 98.3 WRUP and WRUP.com.
