Gwinn, MI- February 1st, 2017- The Ishpeming Hematites were going to need an all around team effort as 2 key players to their success are out due to injury and the Gwinn Modeltowners coming off two straight wins. Well, that’s exactly what they got as everybody stepped their game up and had a great night.
It was a good first quarter for the Hematites as they would get some baskets, but it was the defense that really shined. Ishpeming would only allow 4 points, 2 baskets and 2 free throws. The Hematites were able to put 12 points on the board as they took a 12-4 lead heading into the next quarter.
The Hematites continued their great start into the second quarter as they would add to their lead. Mariah Austin had a big quarter scoring 8 points, as the rest of the team would add another 6 to their total. Gwinn would only add 8 points in the second and trail 26-12 heading into halftime.
Ishpeming would only get hotter from the field as they would add another 22 points to their total and 7 to their overall lead. Marissa Maino would add to the double-double she had in the first half by adding a couple more rebounds and 7 points. Gwinn would get double digit points in the quarter but just couldn’t keep pace with the Hematites as they would lead 47-25 heading into the final quarter.
The Hematites would never let Gwinn go on a run and get this game close. Ishpeming being down two players could not have played a better game as they would add another 7 points to their lead. It was a great team effort as two players would have double-doubles (Austin, Maino) and a third in scoring in double figures (Sjoholm). Ishpeming Hematites win 64-35.
