Gwinn, Michigan – January 19th – The Ishpeming Hematites boys basketball team avenged their December loss to the Gwinn Modeltowners by defeating them 74-57 Thursday night in Gwinn.
The Hematites came out ready to play from the jump. The Hematites used tough pressure on defense and great ball movement on offense to jump out to a 14-2 lead. They never looked back. The charge was led by junior forward Dondre Yohe. He put in both a 3-point basket as well as getting 3 points the old fashioned way, with a basket plus a foul, and converting the free throw.
Modeltowners sophomore point guard kept the Modeltowners in the game, scoring Gwinn’s first 7 points. But Yohe wasn’t done. He added another 3 towards the end of the quarter and the Hematites took a 23-15 lead into the 2nd quarter.
The 2nd quarter started with the Modeltowners clawing back into the game. They began the quarter on a 7-0 run to cut the Hematites lead to just 1. The two teams traded baskets for a majority of the remainder of the quarter. With the Hematites up 5, they put the clamps on Gwinn and began to pull away. Ishpeming went on a 6-0 run with baskets from Jeff Bess, Matthew Trawick, and Hart Holmgren. Jaden Tucker capped off the quarter when he hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer and was fouled. He hit the free throw with no time on the clock to complete the rarely seen 4-point play. The Hematites led 42-29 at the intermission.
The 3rd quarter was a back-and-forth, high scoring battle. Gwinn was led in the quarter by Austin Forbes and Tucker Taylor, who recorded all but 3 of Gwinn’s points. The Hematites were very balanced scoring wise in the 3rd quarter. They got baskets from 5 different players, but they were outscored 16-15 in the quarter and took a 12 point lead into the final 8 minutes.
The Hematites came out with the same fire that they played with in the first quarter. Ishpeming went on an 8-0 run to begin the 4th quarter and build a 20 point lead. This put the final nail in the Modeltowners. The Hematites had 3 players score in double figures. Hart Holmgren led the way with 17, Dondre Yohe was just behind him with 16, and Evan Gravedoni dumped in 10.
The Hematites will look to build on this win when they take on the Gladstone Braves on Tuesday, January 24th. Catch all the action on 98.3 WRUP and wrup.com.
