Green Bay, WI – 9/11/2017 – The Green Bay Packers used a relentless defensive performance on their way to a 17-9 victory over the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday. The Seattle offense never found the end zone and could only muster 3 field goals thanks to the Green Bay defensive front offering constant pressure on Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson.
Neither offense got much going in the first half. There was not a point scored on either side until under a minute remaining in the first half when Seattle, helped in part by questionable timeout usage from Packers head coach Mike McCarthy, got into field goal range. Former Minnesota Viking and current Seahawks kicker Blair Walsh knocked it in from 33 yards out to give Seattle a 3 point advantage heading into halftime.
The Packers offense got going in the second half after their defense recovered a fumble on Seattle’s 6-yard line. Ty Montgomery took a handoff from Aaron Rodgers on the next play and found a sliver of light to cross the goal line and score the first touchdown of the game, and put the Packers up 7-3.
After the Seahawks put together a good drive, but had to settle for another Walsh field goal, the Packers offense went back to work. With Seattle trying to change defensive personnel, Aaron Rodgers saw it, and did what Aaron Rodgers does best. Rodgers went to a quick count and got the ball snapped with Seattle having 12 men on the field. Knowing he had a free play due to the ensuing defensive penalty, Rodgers found Jordy Nelson streaking down the middle of the field and floated a perfect pass to Nelson for a Green Bay score with 17 seconds remaining in the 3rd quarter to put Green Bay up 17-6.
The 4th quarter was a tale of more Green Bay defensive dominance. With Seattle being forced into mostly passing situations down 2 scores, the Packers front line was able to pressure Wilson into having to move out of the pocket and make difficult throws. The Green Bay defensive secondary also did a tremendous job of not allowing Seattle receivers to get open. With Green Bay up 9, and needing a first down to essentially clinch the game, Aaron Rodgers got pressure, but escaped and took off himself. He dove ahead for the first down with 3:00 left on the clock to seal the win for the Packers.
