West Ishpeming, MI – January 10, 2020 – The Ishpeming Hematite boys basketball went up the road to play their rivals on Friday night. Tyler Young and Bob Nadeau Broadcasted the game on 98.3 WRUP.
The first quarter started off strong. Hematite Gavin Argall got the scoreboard started with a ball off the back board 2-0. Patriot Zachary Carlson got sent to the free throw line. Carlson made a basket 2-1. Argall fouled and Patriot Ty Alderton went to the free throw line. Alderton missed his first basket, but made his second 2-2. Patriot Taylor Dellangelo manged to get past Hematite John Corkin. Dellangelo went up and scored 5-2. Alderton followed behind his teammate with a two pointer 7-2. Alderton decided he wanted more, he scored another bucket 9-2. Hematite Argall found confidence and shot a long two pointer 9-4. Argall remained confident and scored another basket 9-6. With thirty seconds left Hematite Ben Pruett fouled and Dellangelo went to the free throw line and scored one bucket 10-6. With less than then seconds left Dellangelo turned around and scored a two pointer 12-6.
The Patriots started the second quarter still pushing on the Hematites. Patriot Zach Beckman scored a three pointer right away 15-6. Westwood sophomore Carlson showed strong defense on the court. Hematite Otto Swanson quickly passed the ball to Jayce Kipling, Kipling scored a three pointer 17-9. Hematite Breck Bell found an opening and got the ball in 17-11.Bell kept things moving for the Hematites with another bucket 17-13. Beckman got called to the free throw line and sunk two balls 19-13. Carlson was quick to get his hands on the ball and score 20-13. Patriot Dellangelo scored a two pointer 22-13. Jacob Kugler responded back with a basket 22-15. Patriot Alderton was not giving up on his Patriots he scored again 26-15. With thirty seconds left Patriot Erik Anderson fouled and Corkin went to the free throw line and scored a bucket 26-16. Patriots called a timeout with ten seconds left. Bell fouled and the Patriots made two free throws 28-16.
The Hematites were trying to chase the Patriots in the third quarter. Bell found an opening and brought the ball up and in 28-18. Jacob Kugler sunk two free throws 30-20. Patriots flew past the Hematites with two buckets back to back 34-20. Kugler and Bell quickly answered with buckets 34-24. Patriot Carlson worked his way inside and bounced one off the rim 36-24. Patriot Mason Mariuzza made an appearance on the court with a bucket 41-24. Carlson quickly followed with a another bucket 43-24. Bell worked his way inside went up and scored 43-26. Carlson had a strong quarter. Carlson went back to the free throw line and scored both baskets 45-26. Alderton tried to score a three pointer right before the buzzer, but missed it.
Corkin came in hot in the fourth quarter and scored a three pointer 45-31. Hematite Chase Jensen was also hot 45-33. Swanson followed in his teammates footsteps with a three pointer 45-36. Bell had his fourth foul. Dellangelo went to the free throw line, he managed to get one in 46-36. Kugler made a smooth free throw 46-37. Pruett fouled out of the game. Carlson scored two free throws 48-37. Corkin quickly found an opening and shot one up 48-39. Dellangelo answered with a two 50-39. Carlson was quick behind Dellangelo scoring for his Patriots 52-39. Ishpeming sophomore Jayce Kipling found an opportunity for a three pointer and made it 52-42. Corkin worked his way back in with a bucket 52-44. Carlson extended the lead with a basket 55-44. Corkin decided he wanted another bucket 55-46. Kugler fouled and Carlson went back to the free throw line. Carlson made both free throws 57-47. Patriot Anderson fouled out of the game with less than a minute left. Kugler went to the free throw line, he made one basket 57-48. Carlson quickly returned back to the free throw line he brought the score up 60-48. The Hematites tried hard to get past the Patriots, but the Patriots were pushing harder. The Patriots kept the win 60-48.
