Ishpeming, MI – January 16th, 2020 –The Ishpeming Hematite girls played against the Iron Mountain Mountaineers at home on Thursday night. Tyler Young and Bob Nadeau were in on the action on 98.3 WRUP.
The Iron Mountain Mountaineers started off with the ball right away. Hematite Kayla Koski fouled. Mountaineer Anslee Runsat was quick to receive the rebound and went to the free throw line. Runsat scored one basket 1-0. Hematite Rylee Harris found the ball and shot up a three 3-1. Harris quickly decided she wanted another three and scored 6-1. Hematite Emma Poirier went to the free throw line and scored both baskets 8-1. Runsat managed to get her hands back on the ball and scored a two pointer 8-3. Runsat’s teammate Reagan Lundholm was quick behind her with a two pointer 8-5. Hematite Harris went to the free throw line and scored a basket 9-5.With less than two minutes left the Mountaineers managed to get a basket in 9-7. Iron Mountain junior Clair Mongrain ended the first quarter at the free throw line 10-9.
The pressure was high for both teams in the second quarter. The Mountaineers got on top with a three pointer immediately 12-9. Mountaineer Lundholm decided the Mountaineers needed another three 15-9. Koski pushed past the Mountaineers with a three pointer 15-12. Olivia Corp took the Hematites a little bit further with a basket 15-14. Poierer followed behind with a three pointer to get the Hematites ahead 17-15. Corp was fast to raise the score up with a bucket 19-15. Iron Mountain was fighting to get in, but the Hematites were pushing them away. Before The end of the second quarter the Hematites scored again 21-15.
The Iron Mountain Mountaineers were chasing the Hematites in the third quarter. Koski went up for a layup and scored 23-15. Mountaineer Mongrain answered with a two pointer 23-17. Hematite Harris quickly moved on in and scored a bucket 25-18. Mongrain decided she was not stopping she scored again 25-21. Iron Mountain senior Lundholm scored a three 25-23. Lundholm immediately decided she needed another three to get her Mountaineers ahead 26-25. Hematites did not let the Mountaineers take the lead for long though they managed to score 27-26. Koski found her teammate Rebekah Loman, Loman scored 29-26. The Mountaineers responded with a bucket before the buzzer 29-28.
The fourth quarter was a battle. Hematite Poierer scored a three pointer 32-28. Lundholm got a free throw in. Hematite Tia Mattila moved like lightning on the court scoring two three pointers back to back 38-29. Runsat walked to the free throw line and scored two buckets 38-31. Hematite Mattila was still hungry for more. Mattila went up with a three and scored 41-31. The Mountaineers and Hematites were struggling to get past each other. The Mountaineers put another two in 41-33. Lundholm passed the ball to Mongrain, Mongrain scored a three pointer 41-36. A timeout was called with a little more than three minutes left on the clock. Olivia Corp came back strong scoring for the Hematites 44-36. The Mountaineers were catching up Lundholm scored a free throw 44-37 Mongrain followed with a smooth three pointer 44-39. When the clock got down to twenty seconds Lindholm scored a three pointer 45-41. With less than five seconds left Mattila attempted to make a three she did not get it in, however her and the Hematites still received the win 45-41.
