The Ishpeming Hematites Dominate Against West Iron Wykons 53-42, On WRUP 98.3

Ishpeming, MI – January 17th, 2022 – The Ishpeming Hematites girls basketball team faced off against the Wykons from West Iron County Monday evening. This full game was broadcast live on 98.3 WRUP!

1st Quarter – In the first quarter of Monday night’s game the Hematites and the Wykons came out with fire. On the tip off was Addie Morton for the Hematites and secured the ball.  Two minutes of the game were under way and a foul to the Wykons gave a chance to score. A quick steal from Bailey Zellar gives the Hematites another 2 points. With under 7 minutes to go in the first quarter the Ishpeming team was at 5-0 leading the Wykons. A foul went to the West Iron team bringing them two goals at 7-5. The Wykons just couldn’t find any footing when the Hematites had an immense shot of momentum and their lead grew at 15-8. The West Iron called a time out. With under 2 minutes left in the first, the Hematites secured another point. The first quarter ends 16-8 for the Hematites.

2nd Quarter – Entering quarter 2 the Hematites kept making smart plays and keeping the ball away from the Wykons. West Iron’s own Kali Harty had a great play getting closer to the Hematites at 16-10. With West Iron starting to gain some traction, Danica Shamion took the ball up the right side looking for someone open. The score was at 18-12 with under 4 minutes left in the first half of Monday’s game when the Wykons shot up and secured their first 3 pointer bringing them to 24-15. There was only 30 seconds left in the 2nd quarter when the Hematites counter attacked against the Wykons and continued pushing. Another two point basket from the Ishpeming team kept their lead far ahead at 30-16. The first half of Monday night’s game comes to a close at 30-17 for the Hematites.

3rd Quarter – Beginning the second half the Hematites and Wykons were both looking strong. The Hematites still gained control of the game at 36-20. They also started with the ball entering the 3rd quarter and went up and down the court leading against the West Iron team. The Ishpeming Hematites kept dominating the Wykons and secured a three pointer but gave away a foul to West Iron. At the top of 3 minutes into the 3rd quarter the Hematites were in the lead by 10 points. The Ishpeming team finished off the quarter at 41-30 dominating the game.

4th Quarter – Going into the last quarter of Monday’ game, the Wykons began to take a little bit of control. The Hematites began with possession. The ball was in a cloud of players when the Wykons knocked it out of bounds; however later Danica Shamion cleared a 3 pointer, 41-33. Ishpemings own Addie Morton responds with her own 3 pointer and it just rolls in, 43-33. Within 2 minutes of the last quarter’s beginning theWykons secured another 2 points. Jenna Maki was fouled on a running play giving her two successful free throw points 49-33. For the Wykons, Haiden Gill floated one in getting them to 49-39. With just over 2 minutes left in the game the Hematites were leading and kept the pressure on the West Iron team. There was no time for the Wykons to gain any offensive advantage and lost to the Hematites, 53-42.
