Honor Credit Union has locations in Gwinn, Marquette, and Negaunee. The Ishpeming Hematites were getting ready to take on the Pewamo-Westphalia Pirates in Detroit at Ford Field on Saturday morning.
The Ishpeming Hematites were able to win the opening coin toss, and they chose to differ receiving the kick off until the second half of play. The Pewamo-Westphalia Pirates received the opening kick off, but the Hematites quickly stopped their return on the Pirates’ 34-yard line. The Pirates’ strong run game allowed the to move the ball down the field into the Hematites’ red zone, but the Hematites came up huge on defense and stopped them on the one-yard line. The first quarter ended with the Pirates in control of the ball and no score on the board.
On the Pirates’ second drive, their strong run game came back to bite the Hematites when they scored the first points of the game, and after a successful two point attempt, the score was 0-8 in favor of the Pirates. The Ishpeming Hematites did the best on their next drive, however, the Pirates were able to stop them. The Pewamo-Westphalia Pirates strong offense continued when they scored on a 50-yard pass play, and after the good two point attempt, the score was 0-16. The Hematites offense seemed to catch fire midway through the second quarter, when they drove the ball steadily down the field toward the goal line. Ozzy Corp scored the first points of the game for Ishpeming on a quick run, and after the unsuccessful two point attempt, the score was 6-16. On the Pirates next drive, they fumbled the ball and Ishpeming was able to recover. The first half of play ended with the Pirates back in control of the ball and a score of 6-16, only on 98.3 WRUP and WRUP.com!

The second half of play opened with the Ishpeming Hematites receiving the kick off from the Pewamo-Westphalia Pirates. Thomas Finnegan helped to move the ball down the field when he was able to catch a long pass for a first down to put Ishpeming into Pirates’ territory. The Hematites continued their steady drive toward the end zone when Ozzy Corp and Thomas Finnegan brought them into the red zone. Ozzy Corp finished off the drive when he was able to go wide on a run to score another touchdown for Ishpeming. After the successful two-point conversion attempt, the score was 14-16. The Pirates held control of the ball until the end of the quarter, but were unable to put any points on the board in the third quarter.
Thomas Finnegan came up with another huge interception just after the start of the fourth quarter for the Ishpeming Hematites, and that put Ishpeming right back into contention, threatening to score again and take the lead. Ozzy Corp scored a touchdown on a short, one-yard run, and after the successful two point attempt, the score was 22-16. The Hematites held strong on defense one last time to stop the Pirates’ final drive of the game and end the Pirates’ hopes of winning the final!
