Escanaba, Michigan– 03/06/3018– The Ishpeming Hematites Girls Basketball team took on the West Iron County Wykons in Escanaba for their second game in Districts. The Hematites came into this game 19-3 as the Wykons were 18-4- two very evenly matched teams. Emily Nelson won the tip-off for the Wykons and scored the first two points to start off the game. The two teams bounced the ball back and forth for quite a bit of time until the Wykons scored a good 11 points. The Hematites followed up as Chloe Sjoholm went to the line to make 1/2 free-throws. Madison Pruett closed the deficit for the Hematites with her three pointer right after Chloe’s shot and then another three pointer to tie the score up to 11-11 at the end of the first. The second quarter had a little more action as the two teams took turns making buckets. The Hematites were able to take the lead back from the Wykons just minutes before the half. 26-23 was the score at half-time.
To start off the second half of the game, the Wykons had possession of the ball. It looked like the Hematites were going to keep the lead in the beginning of the third but the Wykons weren’t giving up that easily. After a tough third quarter, a Wykon tied the score 42-42 and the two teams were neck-in-neck going into the fourth. Chloe Sjoholm scored a nice three pointer for the Hematites in the fourth directly followed up with a shot from Emily Nelson of West Iron County. Towards the end of the fourth, the Hematites were only ahead by one until Madigan Johns made a great old-fashioned 3 point play. Madigan scored the rest of the points for the Hematites in the fourth quarter after that and they took the win over West Iron County, 59-55, and advance into the Regional Finals!

STATS: The Wykons had an average of 44% in their shooting this game, 8/10 free-throws, 12 turn-overs, and 31 rebounds. Emily Nelson scored the most on her team with 14 points. The Hematites had an average of 44.4% in their shooting (79% as a team for the year), 12/13 free-throws, 10 turn-overs, and 21 rebounds. Madigan Johns led all scoring this night with her 19 points. Following behind her for the Hematites was Mariah Austin with 13 points. Madison Pruett scored 12 points. Chloe Sjoholm scored 9 points, Mariah Bertucci scored 4 points and Katie Loman rounded off the scoring for the Hematites with 2 points.
