Ishpeming Hematites Girls Basketball team defeat Gwinn Modeltowners 67-51

Ishpeming, MI – January 31, 2018 – The Ishpeming Hematites Girls High School basketball team took on the Gwinn Modeltowners this evening on Ishpeming’s home court and took a victory with a final score of 67-51.

The Ishpeming Hematites Girls took the court facing off against the Gwinn Modeltowners this evening after defeating the Iron Mountain Mountaineers last Monday as they sought redemption for a loss to the Westwood Patriots the game prior.

The Hematites spared no time making quick work of the Modeltowners in the first frame, taking a lead and trying to hold on to it. Earlier on January 9th these two teams met and the Hematites took victory with a small lead, and they sought to push this games point difference much higher this time around. Although the Hematites held the lead at the start, the Modeltowners showed they were not going to roll over and went shot for shot with Ishpeming and stole the first frame victory from with a score of 13-10 Modeltowners.

Madison Pruett put up the first score in the second with a big 3 and tied up the score 13-13. A fierce back and forth followed as in the first and both teams remained at odds with a tied score to end out the first half 24-24. Mariah Austin lead team scoring with 9 points.

The second half was all Hematites, Madigan Johns put up a 3 pointer at the start and the Hematites fired up and shook off the slumber from their limbs and quickly threw 14 unanswered points into the face of the Modeltowners. Although Gwinn was able to close the score, Ishpeming took the frame victory 46-40.

The final frame of the game had the Modeltowners backs to the wall, unable to answer the now on fire Hematites girls. Mariah Austin laid in a couple 3 point shots and the team made some strong drives to clench the lead in the closing seconds of the game and the Modeltowners were just unable to make up the difference. The Ishpeming Hematites Girls took a hard fought victory with a final score of 67-51.

Madigan Johns and Mariah Austin both scored over 20 points in this game. Johns lead the team with 22 and Austin close behind with 21.

The Ishpeming Hematites Boys will be back in action February 2nd in Iron Mountain as they take on the Mountaineers. Join Mike Plourde and Bob Nadeau on 98.3 WRUP and streaming online at Pre-game is at 7:10PM, and tip-off is at 7:30PM.
