Gwinn, MI – January 9th, 2018 – The Ishpeming Hematites Girls High School Basketball team faced off against the Gwinn Modeltowners this evening takng victory with a final score of 51-45.
True to Michigan High School Sports Athletics, the Ishpeming Hematites played a game a level above what we’ve come to expect from high school basketball. The Modeltowners took an early lead in the first frame, but the Hematites were not far behind, Madison Pruett put in a big 3-pointer narrowing the score to end the frame 18-16 Gwinn.
The second frame opened with Madison Pruett putting a 3-pointer in to take the lead from the Modeltowners, and for a good portion of the second frame the score remained 27-24 Ishpeming. The Hematites pulled ahead in the remainder of the second finishing out with a score of 32-26 to end the first half. Madison Pruett lead the first half score for the Hematites with 10, followed by both Madigan Johns and Mariah Austin with 8.
The third frame was a very close game, Gwinn pushed back against the Hematites closing the point gap one field goal at a time, and in the closing seconds of the frame Gwinn put up a 3 closing the score to just a point difference of 37-36 Ishpeming.
The final frame had Gwinn putting up a tie score when a free throw was made, but Chloe Sjoholm took the lead back with a big 3 with about 6 minutes remaining. Both teams played hard ball and due to a series of fouls by the Modeltowners, the Hematites solidified their victory pulling ahead to win 51-45. Mariah Austin lead the team in points with 14, followed by Madigan Johns with 12, Chloe Sjoholm with 12, Madison Pruett with 10, and Katie Loman with 3. The Ishpeming Hematites Girls move to an 8-1 record.
