Ishpeming, MI – February 11th, 2022 – The Ishpeming Hematites boys basketball team went against the Negaunee Miners Friday night. The game was broadcast live on 98.3 WRUP!
1st Quarter – Entering the game was Jayce Kipling for the Hematites tip off. Tossed out of bounds for the Hematites Friday night. Sunberg was in the back, passed it off to Parker Gauthier and floated it up for 2 points. The Miners team responded to an aggressive drive by the Hematites with a layup, at 6-2 for Ishpeming. The Hematites had more than one chance to set up a drive. The Miners with a drive with another score, still climbing at 8-6. The Hematites had great offensive plays and weren’t letting the Miners touch the ball. In the back the Miners, with only 6 minutes left in the first, tied it up

at 8-8. This quarter was with Jayce Kipling a lot as he continued to grow their lead with another 3 pointer, 11-6. At the end of the first quarter Sunberg at the buzzer scored a 3 pointer entering the 2nd at 19-10.
2nd Quarter – Beginning the second quarter, the Hematites at 21-10 after a couple free-throws. The Negaunee team definitely were looking for some momentum to gain that offensive lead. The second foul on the Hematites did not take them down a peg as they continued to dominate the Negaunee team. Alex Sunberg attempted a long 3 pointer and it was good 23-17. The team just could not catch up to the Hematites aggressive offense. The teams were battling back and forth with the Hematites leading the entire first half of Friday’s game. Addie Morton with the shot made it and was fouled so she went up for two successful free throws. ..The failed basket shots cost the Miners multiple scoring opportunities. At half time the Hematites were in promising position and the Miners were close behind going into the 3rd quarter. 25-12.
3rd Quarter – The Hematites and Miners came into the second half flying with scoring. The game was back underway and the Hematites with possession found Alex Sunberg for a two pointer. The Miners ended up fouling for the fifth time. With the Miners basketball they continued to solidify their lead from the Hematites at 31-15. They began closing the lead at 30-25 , still continuing to dig themselves out of the

hole. Far behind Ishpeming’s inbound Parker Gauthier was on the right side with a good 3 pointer 33-30. Inbound for the Miners was Jason Sagert who laid up for another point for Negaunee tying it up at 35-35. Friday’s game started to float over to the Miners for the win, with the teams tied at 35 at the end of the 3rd quarter.
4th Quarter – In the last quarter of Friday’s game, the Hematites boys team were tied with the Miners at 35. The Ishpeming team started off with the possession and was going through a lot of pressure to close up the game. Jayce Kipling with the Hematites took the ball up the left, scoring a 3 pointer, continuing to secure their lead. However, the Miners responded right back and tied it back up at 38. With 6 minutes left in the game, Parker Gauthier made a steal for the Hematites, and grabbed back the lead. At 46-42, the 4th quarter continued with the Ishpeming offense. Blocked and pushed out of bounds was the Miners, who have been demanding offensively, but just could not get in front. The Hematites were still climbing at 50-45 in the lead with less than a minute in the game. The Hematites completed their victory battling it the whole way, winning against the Negaunee Miners, at 50-46.
