Marquette-Mi (11/14/13) Working at WRUP takes a bunch of different skills: writing, audio engineering and video production to mention a few. I’ve been an electric bass player since 2003 and played hundreds of live concerts. Just like the bass, radio skills take time to develop.
When I first started learning bass, sheet music might as well have been written in Chinese. At that point I would have laughed if someone had asked me for the flat 5th of an A# chord.
I don’t know if I ever would have learned if it weren’t for a few little tricks. Have you ever noticed the little dots on the fretboard? I lived by those dots for months. I couldn’t tell you the name of notes, but I could tell you what dot they were on.
This first lesson is simple, learn the dots. The top string goes as follows E(no fingers down=”Zero”), G(3rd fret), A(5rd fret), B(7rd fret), C#(9th fret), E(12rd fret).
Of course you want to start playing something right away, so here’s an easy one: Zero, 7, 9, 5. Hit each note four times and it should sound like a song you know, or forty of them. This is the most common pattern in Rock music and I still use it all the time. Practice that for about ten minutes each day and next week we’ll be ready to Rock!
Post a comment if you figure out a song that uses that pattern!
