Norway, Michigan – September 13, 2019 – The Ishpeming Hematites walked onto the Ron Berg field in Norway, accompanied by another evening of fair weather to battle the Norway Knights. Ishpeming came with a 2-0 record for the season, eager to make this game a third on 98.3 WRUP.
Tonight’s first quarter started slow. The Hematites continued to demonstrate their strong defense, blocking offensive moves by Norway. A timeout was called by the Knights, where the teams could huddle and talk business. Ishpeming decided to change up their formation, and it worked! Otto Swanson scored the first touchdown, with five minutes left of the first quarter. The score became 8-0 Hematites.
Second quarter was dominated by the Knights. Zachary Seat made a memorable move receiving the ball for a touchdown! This put Norway on the board with seven points. With the score 8-7 Hematites, it was fair game for either team to press into the lead. Tonight’s game had a lot of timeouts called by both sides. It seemed the teams tried to put plenty of thought into their plays. The first half ended 14-8 Norway, after a touchdown on their behalf.
Ishpeming kicked off, returning from halftime. They knew they had catching up to do, and got right to it. They soon caught up, with some hard work by Otto Swanson and John Corkin. The Hematites rose to a lead of 24-14. These boys have a way of catching up in the last half, showcasing their physical endurance and mental determination.
The wind picked up in the third quarter, making throws a little more difficult. At this point Ishpeming was trying to maintain their winning score, and Norway was in “desperation mode.” Some of the players were showing signs of cramps and pain from playing so hard. With 47 seconds remaining of the game, Norway called a timeout. Even if they scored now, they wouldn’t be able to go for the extra points.
The clock ran out, and just like that the Hematites went on undefeated. Will anyone ever take this spectacular team down? 24-14 was the final score. Listen to the full game broadcast of the Ishpeming Hematites vs Norway Nights here.
