Lake Linden, Michigan – September 7th, 2019 – The Ishpeming Hematites started their season very strong last week when they took down the Manistique Emeralds. Today they traveled to Lake Linden-Hubbell, for their next competitor. The weather was gorgeous near the water. A perfect place for Saturday football on 98.3 WRUP.
Brandon Levigne of LLH filled in for an injured quarterback as the Lakes started with the ball. Despite having some position switches, they started well and had some good offense. A little farther in, Ishpeming got possession of the ball. With four downs and six yards separating the Hematites from their touchdown, Otto Swanson scored the first touchdown of the game! John Corkin sequentially snuck past defense to take a two point conversion!
The Lakes crashed back on the Hematites with an 87 yard touchdown by Caleb Klein. LLH went for the two point conversion and they were able to pull that off as well. This put the game at a tie 8-8 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter began with an impressive 86 yard touchdown by Jesse Hill LLH. The score now 14-6 Lakes, the Hematites now had their work cut out for them. An unfortunate loss of possession allowed the Lakes to score a second touchdown. Ishpeming had the ball after, but did not score. Closing up the first half of the game 20-8 Lakes.
Rested and ready to go again, both teams took to the field.
The third quarter got very defensive by Ishpeming, with a great tackle of Jesse Hill. Following that, John Corkin scored a touchdown! Things really started to pick up from here, fighting closely for the win. Next came a LLH touchdown, bringing the score to 26-14 Lakes in the last half. John Corkin made it 26-20 Lakes with a touchdown. Corkin came back fast again with a remarkable 68 yard touchdown for the Hematites now 30-26.
LLH made another touchdown. Levigne the new quarterback ran the conversion in, now 34-30 Lakes. Timeouts were called by both teams as the clock wound down at the end of the fourth quarter. Adrenaline running through every player, the Hematites knew what they must do. With no more time to spare, Ishpeming scored the final, winning touchdown of the game! Go Hematites!
