Hematite Friday Night – The Ishpeming Hematites 22 Crushed the Manistique Emeralds 6 on WRUP 98.3

Written by on August 30, 2019

Ishpeming, Michigan – August 30th, 2019 Tonight’s game marked a strong start for the Ishpeming Hematite’s season as they finished triumphant with a score of 22-6 over the Manistique Emeralds on WRUP 98.3. The end of summer weather was warm enough to comfortably get back into football season. Tyler Young and Bob Nadeau were seated at the fifty yard line, bringing the game to you live on air.

Tensions rose on the Ishpeming Playground. Poor snaps from both sides left the ball in Emerald hands three minutes into the first quarter. Manistique scored the first touchdown of the game, but they were unable to pull off a two point conversion. This put the score at 6-0 Emeralds. Despite Manistique taking the early lead, Ishpeming did not let them keep it. John Corkin came through with Ishpeming’s first touchdown of the night. Followed by a two point conversion, this wrapped up the first quarter 8-6 Hematites.

Come second quarter the Hematites set the game in stone. The senior-dominated team scored their second touchdown of the game about halfway through the quarter. Corkin played strong tonight, with this being his second touchdown followed by a two point conversion. The score grew to 16-6 Hematites.

The players’ endurance carried on into the third quarter, where Ishpeming had an amazing play. Good blocking allowed Otto Swanson to make an epic touchdown against Manistique. Despite Emeralds hanging onto Swanson, trying to stop him from moving along, he pushed through to make the “play of the game.” In his coach’s own words, it was simply “a good play by a good kid.” After the touchdown there was a two point conversion, leaving the score 22-6.

Fourth quarter came and was rather relaxed. No more touchdowns were made by either team. This was a good game to get back into the season, and every player put forth tons of effort. The Ishpeming Hematites had a win on their own turf, which is excellent for them.

Join Tyler Young and Bob Nadeau on Saturday, September 7th for the next Hematite game against Lake Linden Hubble. You can catch the pregame around 1:45 PM on WRUP 98.3, or stream live!
