Ishpeming, MI – January 17th, 2018 – The Ishpeming Girls High School Sports Basketball team took on the Iron Mountain Mountaineers this evening taking home victory with a final score of 58-48.
The Ishpeming Hematites Girls High School Basketball had a great evening in the Ishpeming old gym this evening with both the junior and varsity teams taking victory. The Ishpeming old gym of course is approaching 100 years of age soon and is significantly smaller than the standard court today, and this played part to a folly for the Hematites and the Mountaineers as they were not versed on such a small area of play.
Despite Iron Mountain having only a single victory, the girls came into the game scrapping against the home team and put up an incredible show as to remind the Hematites they were not fodder. The first frame was shot for shot between both teams holding a tie game 8-8 at one point before the Hematites pulled ahead and nested with a comfortable lead at the end of the frame of 18-9.
The Hematites played to their strengths and kept their lead through the second quarter, the girls at this point retaining a shot for shot match with Iron Mountain and finished the first half leading the Mountaineers 30-19. Both Mariah Austin and Madigan Johns lead the team scores with 9, followed by Chloe Sjoholm with 6.
The second half of the game played out the same as the first half. Madigan Johns and Mariah Austin put up some impressive 3-pointer shots, and ultimately maintained a roughly 18 point lead at one point in the third before Iron Mountain changed tempo and closed the gap back to an array around 10. The game continued at this pace and ultimately the Hematites Girls took victory with their comfortable 10 point lead to a final score of 58-48.
It can’t be understated how well Ishpeming and Iron mountain both adjusted to the size of the court, both teams played incredibly well under the circumstances and Iron Mountain especially made it clear to the rest of the division that not even the Hematites who are 8-1 can become complacent because of the Mountaineers season record without taking some damage.
Madigan Johns lead the team score with 18, followed by Chloe Sjoholm with 16, and Mariah Austin with 13. Katie Loman and Madison Pruett also put points on the board.
