Ishpeming, MI- November 28th, 2017- The Ishpeming Hematite Girls Basketball team opened their season against the Bark River Broncos with a 78-40 victory on 98.3 WRUP. The team was returning a lot of experience from last year. The Hematites had quite a successful season and with a lot of girls returning from last year, they were looking to build on that success.
The first half started with a quick start by the Bark River Broncos taking a 5-0 lead over the Hematites. After that, it was all Ishpeming as they shot 48% from the field as a team. Mariah Austin lead the team in scoring with 16 points. The Hematites dominated on the glass out rebounding the Broncos 18-15. Defensively, Ishpeming forced nine Bark River turnovers. The Hematites lead at the half 37-22.
Ishpeming came into the second half with a strong lead and maintained the momentum. The Broncos failed to get footing against the Hematites defenses and were overwhelmed coming into the fourth quarter trailing 38 points narrowly avoiding a running clock. Each Ishpeming Hematite both scored points and rebounded the ball making for a total of 38 rebounds, while Mariah Austin brought home 24 points leading the team to victory, however it cannot be understated the Hematites played a dominating game winning 78-40.
Mike Plourde and Bob Nadeau will bring the call for Monday’s game. The Ishpeming Hematites girls basketball team take on the Kingsford Flivvers on 98.3 WRUP. Tip-off at 8:00PM, pregame at 7:30.
