Ishpeming, MI – 08/25/2017- The Hematites did great in the first game of the 2017-18 football season. 34-7 was the final score that gave Ishpeming their first win over Iron Mountain. Both teams had great plays throughout this game and it will be an exciting game if they take each other on in the future.
The first half started off a little slow for the Hematites. Iron Mountain won the toss and started off with the ball. It wasn’t until after the Mountaineer, Jacob Tucker (#6), scored the first touchdown of the game that Ishpeming started to kick up their defense. “Defense is the name of the game so far for Ishpeming”- Mike pointed out. In the second quarter, Hunter Smith (#61) made a touchdown for the Hematites with an eight yard run and Donald Denofre (#4) made the second touchdown for the team with a thirty-nine yard run. Iron Mountain was trailing Ishpeming 7-12 at halftime.
The second half of the game went even better for Ishpeming. The Mountaineers were unable to score
against our Hematites for the rest of the game! Gavin Sundberg and Matt Trawick had such a great defensive play going together in the third quarter that Gavin was able to make an eighteen yard return and get the first turnover for the game for Ishpeming and Matt drove way down to the thirty yard line of the Mountaineers all while breaking several tackles! The Hematites scored the last few touchdowns of the game to get the winning score of 34-7.
The first game of the season came and went with the Hematites on top of their game. Hematite Friday night! The next game will be just as great.
