Ishpeming, MI- February 17, 2017- Tonight you would see a tight, chippy game between the Ishpeming Hematites boys basketball team and the Manistique Emeralds. Things would get very physical as both teams would have players in foul trouble as the game was getting closer to an end. It was going to be a battle of free throw and field goal percentage.
It was a sluggish start for the Hematites in the first quarter, it could have been due to the fact that there was no school for Ishpeming today. It was Manistique jumping out to a 6-0 lead before the Hematites got themselves on the board. After Ishpeming was able to wake up and get their legs going this turned into an exciting quarter as there was a lot of run and gun. Hematites rallied back to tie things up before the buzzer at 16.
The second quarter wasn’t quite the offensive game like the first quarter was. But there was some action in this quarter. First you saw Hart Holmgren walk off the court with what looked to be an ankle injury. He was able to put weight on it and walk off on his own power. The Hematites would outscore the Emeralds 12-6 in the quarter backed by good defense and two baskets from beyond the arch from Dondre Yohe. Ishpeming led heading into the half 28-22.
The third quarter might have been the best quarter for the Hematites. Hart Holmgren would make his return after he was able to test his ankle during the halftime break. Ishpeming would add another 17 points to their total while the defense would hold the Emeralds to 13. During the quarter you would see the Hematites go on a 9-0 run that would help them to a 10 point lead heading into the fourth. Ishpeming up 45-35.
The fourth quarter would get tight as the Hematites lead would shrink down to three points at one point. But that is as close as it would get before Ishpeming would pull away with about three minutes left in the game. As this physical game came to a close the fouls added up for the Emeralds and the Hematites were able to make the free throws they were given. The were helped by Hart Holmgren who missed the second quarter but was able to collect 29 points and Dondre Yohe getting 24 points on the night. Ishpeming defeats Manistique 70-55.
