Marquette, MI – February 14, 2017 – The Ishpeming Hematites suffered a difficult 2nd half of basketball in Marquette on Tuesday night en route to a 71-38 loss to the Redmen.
The Ishpeming Hematites came out of the starting gates ready to play with one of the best teams in the Upper Peninsula. The Redmen came out hot, scoring the first 5 points of the game, but the Hematites would not be deterred. Hart Holmgren carried the offensive load for the Hematites throughout the first quarter. He scored all of Ishpeming’s 10 points in the first 8 minutes. Unfortunately for the Hematites, while Holmgren was making two pointers, Jackson Ostrowsky was hitting threes. He hit 3 in the quarter and Marquette led 16-10 at the end of the first quarter.
The Hematites fought back in the 2nd quarter. After Marquette went up 20-12 on a pair of free throws, the Hematites went on a 6-0 run to cut their deficit to just 2. However, Marquette answered with a 7-0 run of their own to take back control. The Redmen took a 29-20 lead into halftime.
The third quarter was not kind to the Hematites. It looked promising when the Hematites scored 4 of the quarter’s first 6 points to make the score 31-24. The flood gates then opened. Marquette’s Trey Mcferrin scored the games next 7 points as part of an 18-0 Redmen run. Ishpeming finally stopped the bleeding with an Andrew Engler basket, but Marquette then scored 7 pf the quarter’s final 11 points. Marquette outscored Ishpeming 27-10 in the third quarter and took a 56-30 lead into the final quarter.
Down 26 to begin the 4th, the Hematites had to play a flawless quarter to come back. But Marquette scored the first 8 points of the final quarter and essentially shut the door on the Hematites. The Hematites fell to the Redmen by a final score of 71-38.
The loss drops the Hematites to 7-8 on the season. They will look to bounce back when they take on the Manistique Emeralds on Friday, February 17th. You can catch all the action on 98.3 WRUP and WRUP.com.
