Ishpeming Girls Hematites Girls Basketball Team Defeats Ishpeming Westwood Patriots 41-27

Ishpeming, MI January 27th, 2017- Tonight we saw two different games as it truly was a tale of two halves. Things started off slow in the first quarter and really slowed down in the second. But in the second half the Hematites came alive and was able to start sinking baskets like we are used to seeing.

It was a low scoring first quarter for both teams as things were tight defensively. There was little separation between these teams, as it seemed liked the Hematites were playing into Westwood’s game. Still, Ishpeming were able to take the lead heading into the next quarter 11-8.

The same trend would continue into the second quarter, the only difference, things would slow down even more. We would only see 8 total points scored in the quarter, as this thing was getting physical. Katie Loman had to be helped off the court due to an ankle injury. Ishpeming was hanging on heading into the half 15-12

The offense picked up a little for the Hematites in the third quarter, due to a 10-0 run to open second half. Ishpeming can thank Mariah Austin for that run as she would score 8 of those 10 points. The Hematites would outscore the Patriots 12-5 in the third quarter as they would take a 27-17 lead heading into the final quarter.

The Hematites were able to keep adding in the fourth quarter as things were completely different than the first half. It seemed that the points Mariah Austin scored to start the half sparked the rest of the team. Katie Loman would not return to the game but luckily her team could rally around her and win this one 41-27.
