Ishpeming, Michigan – December 14, 2016 – The Ishpeming Hematites boys basketball team was not able to overcome a big 4th quarter run by the Gwinn Modeltowners as they fell 65-52.
It was a great 3 quarters of basketball for the Ishpeming Hematites Wednesday night in Ishpeming. They held a 5 point lead as they headed into the final 8 minutes. The offense struggled in the 4th quarter and Gwinn used a 17-0 run to begin the quarter to help beat the Hematites.
A big bright spot for the Hematites was junior forward Hart Holmgren. Holmgren was an unstoppable force in the first half where he registered 20 of the team’s 31 points. With his team trailing by 6 after the first quarter, Holmgren went on a reign of terror. Holmgren had 14 of his first half 20 in the 2nd quarter and gave his team a 31-26 lead heading into halftime.
The start of the second half was very back and forth. The Modeltowners tried to take command, but the Hematites always had an answer. Another junior forward, Dondre Yohe, had the hot hand in the 3rd quarter for the Hematites. He had 9 points and the Hematites were able to keep the lead, 43-38, heading into the final quarter.

The 4th quarter was all Modeltowners while the Hematites struggled to score. The Modeltowners began the quarter on a 17-0 run and it proved too much for the Hematites to overcome. Head coach Anthony Katona says his team “shot ourselves out of the game” in the 4th quarter. After being outscored 27-9 over the final 8 minutes, the Hematites fell to Gwinn, 65-52.
The Hematites will take the court again after the new year when they take on the Norway Knights Tuesday, January 3rd. We’ll have all the action for you on 98.3 WRUP and live on WRUP.com.
